The role of cyclodextrins in repairing dysfunctional lung surfactant

My work will provide an important insight of the newly developed S1229. Cyclodextrins (S1229) are cyclic molecule composed of 7-sugars, with a unique structure. S1229 forms a hydrophobic core, which interacts with cholesterol and phospholipid by-products and removing them from the membrane. SolAeroMed has shown that S1229 was able to repair lung surfactant function. Lung surfactant is protein-lipid mixture covering the air-water interphase in the lung. Surfactant is an essential component of healthy lung function and without it, breathing would be near impossible. Therefore, to build on the information SolAeroMed has for S1229, the project will answer crucial questions for the successful clinical development of S1229. By understanding which CD sub-class shows better ability to repair the surfactant film, examine toxicity and possible side effects, SolAeroMed would be better equipped for the development of S1229 and commercializing it.

Congestion Control for Ethernet Networks supporting ICN and 5G – Year 2

Ethernet networks are typically best effort networks where traffic flows may contribute on creating network congestion and lead the switches to start dropping packets randomly. This results in unstable network latency that some applications cannot tolerate, especially in the context of 5G networks where delay constraints are very tight. The proposed research project aims at exploring and developing an innovative switch behavior for handling proactively traffic congestion in Ethernet network as a common Layer 2 infrastructure for the Core and Transport Network in C-RAN (Cloud Radio Access Network). The new knowledge, innovation and developed technologies will be integrated to Ericsson 5G scenario as a value added feature.

Adsorption of tannins on copper surface

Tannins, natural renewable molecules, have exhibited excellent corrosion inhibition properties, comparable to those of non-renewable counterparts. TGWT Clean Technologies Inc. has a portfolio of tannin-based corrosion inhibitors, which are being used in industry to protect mild steel (MS) steam boilers, high efficiency condensing aluminium boilers, as well as multi-metal heating and cooling closed-loop systems. Copper equipment is ubiquitous in industry, e.g. heat exchangers. Industrial case studies have shown that green tannin blends perform efficiently on copper corrosion inhibition, based on copper coupons exposed to industrial waters for about 210 days. However, the exact mechanism by which tannins protect copper hasn’t been studied.
In this work, the adsorption of tannins on copper surfaces will be studied using different methods. The effect of copper ions concentration (0-50 ppm), pH (from 7 to 10), and ionic strength (0-20 mM) will be investigated.

Optimization and compatibility study of a pH-responsive terpolymercomposite membrane for controlled release dosage forms

A new film coating that can respond appropriately to different pH conditions of the stomach and small intestine (GI tract) was successfully prepared by combining pH-responsive nanoparticles with ethylcellulose polymer. However, the performance of the composite membrane has not been optimized for controlling drug release in the GI tract. Therefore, improvements are to be made through experimental design, such as central composite design, to find the appropriate composition of the nanoparticles to achieve the best overall combination of coating properties. The final membrane, then, can be tested for compatibility with different drugs and their release. The best ratio of composition, and different drug compatibilities are expected to be found. The field is of intern’s main interest for graduate studies, and is a great opportunity for hands-on experience, and can be of great contribution of new knowledge for partner organization.

Sustainable Copper Extraction Using Synthetic Biology

Copper, a conductive metal, forms the basis of much of our manufacturing and electrical infrastructure. Yet, despite high demands for the metal, supply is not keeping pace. One of the chief reasons is that copper extraction faces steep technical challenges that have steadily pushed up capital expenditures. We propose to use a recent innovation called synthetic biology to greatly improve the efficiency and cost of copper extraction. Our method employs microorganisms that leach copper via a process called bioleaching. Despite the method’s promise, however, some challenges remain. Notably, the conditions that favour bioleaching result in the formation of a thin protective layer (passivation) around the copper ore. Further improvements in bioleaching are contingent on elimination of this layer. Our industrial partner, Jetti Services, has developed a proprietary catalyst that achieves this goal. However, dosage of the catalyst reduces microbial fitness. Consequently, we are employing genetic engineering to improve the fitness and metabolic output of the microbes to leach copper in the presence of the catalyst. Our work will significantly improve leaching yields and promises to be a game-changer for the mining industry.
