COVID-19 Teaching and Learning Transition Project

As people and institutions around the world are incurring the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, education has felt a large blow. This blow is not only felt by students in post-secondary education who are needing to be educated, but also by instructors, administrators and staff who are all being transitioned into the online format.
For our study, we are looking to collect and analyze readiness data from members of the Ontario Tech University to explore how ready they were to transition in terms of teaching and learning to an online format, as well as their perceptions of their experiences. By doing so, we will be able to investigate the digital competence of individuals in the OntarioTechU community in pre- and post-COVID online teaching and learning contexts, and in turn, glean useful information from the transitional experiences of those involved.

The Impact of Cultural and Economic Factors on Play and Purchase Decisions for Tabletop Games

Wiggles 3D is a company that has set its goal to create relevant, inclusive, and entertaining tabletops games that are accessible to all who may find them of interest. However, much of game research has focused on a user group’s life stage or the occasion at which a game is played, while not so much on cultural aspects, such as players’ ethnicity or the cultural context of their lifestyle. This lack of understanding of the impact of cultural differences on attitudes, behaviours, and habits that emerge in tabletop gameplay marks a significant research problem, because in order to create more inclusive and relevant games, it is key to understand cultural differences. In an era where equality and respect remain more difficult to achieve than ever, board and tabletop games can be a medium that allows racial-ethnic diversity and cultural expression.

Unifying single-image lighting estimation

We present a method for automatically estimating the lighting conditions from a single image. As opposed to most previous works which proposed methods that deal with individual aspects of the problem (e.g. indoors vs outdoors, parametric vs non-parametric), the proposed method unifies these ideas into a single, coherent framework. Our method will automatically estimate both parametric (individual light sources) and non-parametric (environment maps) lighting representations from both indoor and outdoor images. To this end, we will develop a novel deep learning architecture to automatically learn the mapping between an input image to its lighting conditions in an end-to-end fashion, by relying on a large dataset of indoor and outdoor high dynamic range images for training. The method will be quantitatively evaluated and compared to the most relevant approaches from the literature.

Studying the oxygenation of 3D printed pancreatic tissues

Most people with type 1 diabetes control their blood sugar levels through frequent blood glucose monitoring and insulin injections or infusion. Insulin therapy is life-saving but also life-altering and leads to decreased life expectancy. Instead, insulin-producing cells could be transplanted in devices which would prevent their rejection by the immune system. The design of these devices must take into account oxygen supply to the graft, which becomes more problematic in human-scale devices compared to studies conducted in animals such as mice. Aspect Biosystems is developing pancreatic tissue devices fabricated by 3D bioprinting live insulin-producing cells. The objective of this project is to develop and implement a system to study oxygen profiles in these tissue patches. Ultimately, this project could lead to a new therapy to treat diabetes which would be long-lasting and require little to no daily intervention.

Studying Gameful Design for Bite-Sized Information Consumption

MLD Solutions are facing the challenge of creating engagement with their online platform Mozaik.Global that allows users to create, distribute, and sell interactive digital content. This content is created in bite-sized units, currently visualized as cards. The key problem with this new type of digital content is that the company currently does not know how to make this content engaging. To address this problem, we will study the impact of gameful elements to motivate use of Mozaik.Global. Understanding how gameful design can be used for bite-sized information creation and consumption marks a significant research problem, because not many measures or methods exist to assess the effectiveness of such gameful applications in this specific context. Our primary deliverable in this project will be a user research report studying how gameful design elements motivate users in the context of bite-sized content.

VT-19: Continuous Calibration-free SPO2 Monitoring for COVID-19 Using Deep Learning

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses and COVID-19 is a new disease from this family that has not been previously identified in humans [1]. Those who are infected with COVID-19 may have little to no symptoms and may take up to 14 days to appear after exposure to COVID-19 [2]. It’s possible to detect this disease early by measuring the heart rate, blood oxygenation (SpO2), body temperature and heart rate variability and isolate the person to prevent the spread of the virus. VitalTracer has developed a medical wrist device that continuously tracks bio-signals in real-time. The purpose of this study is to present an algorithm that translates collected bio-signals from a non-invasive, low cost, and convenient wearable device (VT-19) into reliable blood oxygen saturation estimate. Applications of such a system range from false alarm suppression to improving estimates of derived physiological parameters such as heart rate and oxygen saturation.

Towards joint inversion of seismic and muon tomography data for reservoir monitoring

Hydrocarbon production methods extract mass from the subsurface and consequently change the density distribution. Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) uses steam to enhance the heavy oil in the subsurface which mobilizes it and allows it to be pumped to the surface. Today, we do not know very accurately, where oil is produced and where steam is moving in the subsurface. This leads to waste of steam and inefficient production. This project proposes a new method to monitor the density distribution continuously through muon tomography, which uses sensors placed in boreholes and measures the incoming muons, which image the density distribution. Together with seismic imaging, we will attempt a joint inversion to exploit the advantages of both methods, the innovative muon tomography and the established 4D seismic method. This method could optimize production efficiency and mitigate environmental risks.

Greenest City Conversation Project Part One

Greenest City Conversations is an innovative, interdisciplinary and wide-scale research project aimed at developing multiple channels for public engagement on sustainability policies. Its two main goals are (1) to facilitate discussion, solicit and analyze public attitudes and opinions on, and support for, a variety of sustainability policies; and (2) to provide a comprehensive understanding of the content and impacts (both qualitative and quantitative) of different modes of public engagement (“channels”). It will serve as a pilot project for potential future applications in other jurisdictions and at other scales. The project offers an opportunity to address both the need for broad public engagement, and for meaningful collaboration amongst the City of Vancouver, BC Hydro, UBC and SFU in exploring public interest in and understanding on sustainability. Identification des protéines cellulaires impliquées dans l’effet antiviral des polymères d’acides nucléiques (NAPs) lors d’une infection par le virus de l’hépatite B (VHB) (PARTIE-II)

L’hépatite B est une affection hépatique causée par le virus de l’hépatite B (VHB) qui peut évoluer sous une forme chronique et exposer les malades à un risque important de cirrhose et/ou de cancer hépatique. Malgré un vaccin efficace, le VHB affecte de façon chronique plus de 270 millions de personnes et cause plus de 800 000 décès par année. Récemment, l’entreprise montréalaise Replicor a procédé à l’élaboration d’un traitement novateur basé sur l’utilisation de « polymère d’acides nucléiques » (NAPs). Lors d’essais cliniques préliminaires, les NAPs ont montré une baisse significative des particules virales circulantes chez la majorité des patients. De plus, des études in vitro réalisées dans notre laboratoire ont mis en évidence l’effet antiviral des NAPs qui se matérialise par une diminution de la sécrétion d’antigènes HBsAg par les cellules hépatiques. Les NAPs représentent donc actuellement l’une des molécules les plus prometteuses dans le traitement de l’hépatite B. Cependant à ce jour ni la cible cellulaire ni le mécanisme d’action ne sont clairement établis.

Sustainable and Reusable Face Masks for Combating the Spread of COVID-19

This project seeks to develop a novel, sustainable, self-sanitizing face masks for purpose of providing more robust solutions and mitigate the health risks for the front line workers and general public during this, as well as any future pandemics. This is accomplished by design of novel filters composing of cellulose derived nanofibrils and electrochemically exfoliated graphene, and 3D printing the lightweight, customizable face mask body. Cellulose nanofibrils are made of renewable, recyclable natural resources—pulp is the main source material—and testing to date suggests that it is non-toxic and its production poses no serious environmental risks. Graphene is chemically identical to graphite (widely used in pencil lead), and safe to dispose. anada has become a leader in production of new materials from cellulose, and the proposed project directly supports the development of Canada renewable sector while combating the spread of COVID 19 pandemic and climate change.

Study of swine metabolism in a cell line model

Understanding swine metabolism is important to the pork industry, for the improvement of feed efficiency and meat quality, in addition to animal wellbeing. We have recently discovered two stress genes (Luman/CREB3 and LRF/CREBRF) that regulate animal responses to stress. Mutation of these Luman or LRF gene resulted in animals that are more tolerate to stress, in the meantime being lean with very low abdominal fat. Here we propose to further our study on how these genes regulate metabolism using a swine liver cell system. We believe that the proposed research will cast light on the underlying mechanism of why our mutant mice are lean, at the molecular and cellular level. The outcomes of this research will not only benefit the pork industry by increasing production efficiency and enhancing animal welfare, but may also help understand and treat various metabolic diseases of humans.
