Isobody is a body sizing system that assigns 3-character codes to clusters of equal anthropometric measurements (+/- 2 cm). The problem Isobody seeks to solve is the energy and materials waste associated with unpredictable clothing fit. The primary objective of the project is to create a Business Model and Strategic Plan for Isobody. A key component of this objective is to develop a pitch document for investors that clearly identifies the ROI potential of their investment.

Apprentissage automatique pour la résolution de problèmes de tournées de véhicules avec préférences implicites

Fastercom est une entreprise spécialisée dans le développement d’algorithmes et de logiciels permettant de résoudre différentes formes du problème de tournée de véhicules, le « Vehicle Routing Problem » (VRP). Les contraintes considérées sont généralement très diverses et varient selon les domaines des clients. L’objectif de ce projet est de concevoir une méthode visant à améliorer l’efficacité des résolutions de problèmes de tournées de véhicules en tenant compte des préférences implicites des répartiteurs, chauffeurs ou autres profils opérationnels ayant développés une connaissance du terrain et des enjeux concrets des tournées de véhicules dans le mode réel. Pour cela, nous prévoyons d’utiliser des méthodes de pointe en apprentissage automatique pour obtenir ces contraintes de préférences implicites.

SSE_GUILLAUME LESSARD-ECOHABITATION-louison devillard – Formation « Vers des municipalité post-carbones et résilientes »

Écohabitation développe une démarche complète de services afin d’aider les municipalités à effectuer leur transition écologique et éco-énergétique (accompagnement, développement de programmes, service d’expertise, formations, conseil…), et ce, afin de répondre à une demande et une urgence exprimées. La question de la voie à prendre pour réussir ces transitions est un sujet de débat à teneur politique alors qu’il devrait être à teneur scientifique. Les décideurs municipaux (élus et directeurs) réclament des ressources ou un accès à une information juste, neutre et objective liées à ce qu’ils peuvent faire à l’intérieur du cadre législatif et juridique municipal.
Écohabitation désire à cet effet développer une formation thématique aux arguments scientifiques vulgarisés pour les décideurs municipaux touchant la ville résiliente post-carbone qui doit arborer les chemins de la transition pour y arriver. Qu’est-ce que cela veut dire ? Qu’est ce qui doit être fait ? Quels dogmes devons-nous abandonner et quels paradigmes devons-nous adopter ? Sur quoi agir urgemment et qui soit puissant en termes de résultats ?
Ces questions seront répondues à travers 7 thèmes qui composeront la formation (transition, aménagement, énergie, capital écologique, eaux, habitation, matériaux et matières résiduelles) qui combinera une interview de spécialistes reconnus et du matériel didactique en appui.

A rapid systematic COSMIN review of impact indicators suitable for the Canadian Cancer Society’s knowledge mobilization programs

In partnership with donors and volunteers the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) continuously improves impact through cancer research, advocacy and support services. CCS’ goal is to provide the highest quality cancer information for all Canadians, promote cancer prevention, and provide targeted support to help people with cancer, their families and caregivers, cope.
This project aims to support the articulation of impact of the CCS. Given the CCS’ broad scope of programming, the identification of outcomes and the selection of instruments to measure outcomes requires a rigorous approach. The project will rely on an established approach for the selection of instruments and the assessment of their quality – the COSMIN methodology. The COSMIN approach is a type of systematic review that focuses on instruments and their properties. The project will be an important step in CCS’ development of an impact measurement framework to highlight its importance, its successes and identify areas for improvement.

Compressed Air Energy Transmission

This research project focuses on developing a compressed air energy transmission system as an alternative to the current electrical energy transmission system. Compressed air has the potential to be an efficient and cost-effective solution for storing energy from renewable sources like wind and solar. The project will focus on improving the efficiency of current compressed air energy storage systems by utilizing a novel Variable Pressure Vessel. The research will assess technical factors such as pressure and power loss, as well as economic parameters related to production, transportation, conversion, and storage of compressed air. By addressing the challenges of efficiency and cost, this project will contribute to the advancement of energy storage technologies and support the integration of renewable energy sources into the existing energy infrastructure. The outcomes of this research will provide valuable insights into efficient and sustainable energy transportation and storage systems.

Archaeology of color in Central Argentine Patagonia. First archaeometric approach of pigment samples from SW Chubut

Studies carried out in SW Chubut have demonstrated the archaeological potential of this area of central Patagonia. This is not only due to its early dates (9,000 years BP for Casa de Piedra de Roselló, and 10,000 years BP for Alero Dasovich), but also to the value of sites and materials recovered. Particularly, pigments stand out because of its conspicuous presence in the area (there have been found remains of decorated leather blankets, rock art, painted lithic artifacts, colored animal bones and wood, and textiles). However, this materiality has not been analyzed, or has only been analyzed in its formal dimension. Thus, this project proposes an archaeometric approach of archaeological colors, with the aim of understanding its importance among hunter-gatherer societies who used them throughout the Holocene and its relations with other aspects of social life. The possibility of a research stay at Université Sherbrooke would enable the substantial advance of this research, allowing numerous physico-chemical analyses, as the proposed institution has the necessary equipment for meeting these objectives.

Next Generation Building Envelope Inspection using Robotics and Artificial Intelligence

Building envelopes are essential for structural integrity, moisture control, and air management in a building. Damage to a building envelope could result in safety concerns for building occupants, reductions in operational efficiency, or ingress moisture leading to long-term degradation. This project is focused on the development of an autonomous building envelope inspection system using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and artificial intelligence. This work will include the conduct of field inspections using a UAV, development and application of novel autonomous UAV navigation techniques, and the use of machine learning algorithms for object detection and damage recognition. Outcomes of this work have the potential to improve the safety of building envelope inspections by eliminating the need for human inspectors to access roofs, improving the reliability of inspections by collecting quantitative building envelope performance data, and increase inspection efficiency using autonomously navigating robots, something that could also be used in post-disaster scenarios.

Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DfMA) for Architects with Industrial Robots

Robotics will transform the construction industry in the next decade, yet Canada is lagging in producing the highly qualified professionals needed to support that transformation. With a high percentage of the construction workforce retiring in the next five years, Canada must find ways to integrate robotics into the processes of design and fabrication of our built environment. This transformation cannot simply happen on the construction site, it must be integrated into how buildings are designed to take advantage of the opportunities that robotically assisted construction has to offer. This research project proposes that robotics has a vital role to play in the early design phases within the office of the architect, where knowledge of new construction processes will be integrated into the design of buildings. Moving beyond the design of form to include the design of processes, this research will investigate proto-processes using digital software, computer code and physical models to test processes at small scale, concepts which could easily be integrated into most architectural design offices to assist in transforming how we conceive of the process of building and design.

Géologie structurale, hydrothermalisme et minéralisation aurifère dans la région d’Eeyou-Istchee Baie James – le cas du secteur du lac Menarik

Ce projet de recherche sera effectué en collaboration entre l’UQAM, un partenaire industriel, Harfang Exploration, et le CONSOREM (Consortium de recherche en exploration minérale), afin de développer nos connaissances géologiques et métallogéniques d’Eeyou Istchee Baie-James, une région nordique et isolée du Québec. Cette région possède un important potentiel de développement minier, en particulier pour l’or, mais la connaissance limitée du territoire en termes de contexte géologique et de nature des minéralisations présentes, complexifie le ciblage des travaux d’exploration. Ce projet vise à mieux comprendre l’organisation structurale et statigraphique de certaines zones minéralisées connues sur la propriété d’Harfang Exploration (propriété Lac Menarik), et de documenter leurs caractéristiques minéralogiques en utilisant des outils analytiques de pointe en partenariat avec le CONSOREM. Ultimement, ce projet mènera à la création de modèles métallogéniques qui permettront un ciblage plus efficace de l’exploration minérale.

Optimization methodologies for Net-Zero Energy Communities

The future of energy supply in Ontario is uncertain. We are faced with an aging nuclear fleet and pressure to avoid future energy generation near communities. Building demands are a strain on energy supplies. A solution is to reduce building energy needs while providing sufficient distributed energy generation on a community-scale. A net-zero energy (NZE) community creates as much energy as it requires. The impetus behind this research is a community under development in London, ON, which aims to achieve NZE. This project involves several partnerships, under the management of the sponsoring organization S2E Technology.
S2E will sponsor me as a post-doctoral fellow at McMaster University. I am working on the economic and energy optimization of the buildings and district energy system design. The benefit to S2E will be a repeatable methodology to identify pathways to NZE community design in present and future communities.
