Mitacs Research Council member Professor Emeritus Jo-ann Archibald Q’um Q’um Xiiem recognized with Order of Canada

Vancouver, BC — Professor Emeritus Jo-ann Archibald, Q’um Q’um Xiiem an educational scholar and member of the Mitacs Research Council, has been appointed Officer of the Order of Canada. One of the highest honours in Canada, the Order of Canada is presented to people who make extraordinary contributions to society.

Professor Emeritus Archibald, a visionary in the advancement of Indigenous education, is a member of the Stól:lō Nation. Described as an agent of change, Archibald’s work in Indigenous education at all levels is recognized across Canada for creating culturally relevant curriculum, teacher education and graduate programs.

She has transformed the educational landscape through pedagogy, program development, policy, teaching, and research. Her seminal book, Indigenous Storywork: Educating the Heart, Mind, Body, and Spirit, focuses on meaning-making with Indigenous traditional and life-experience stories, intergenerational learning, and ethical considerations for using Indigenous stories, which is a core part of Indigenous knowledge systems.

The Mitacs Research Council benefits from Archibald’s knowledge, wisdom, and advice in reviewing research proposals for all disciplines and projects inside and outside of Canada.
