Access to Cash: The Role of Bank Competition and Entry in Local Markets

One of the objectives of this project is to analyze the impact of policies and regulations on the provision of cash through cash access points – bank branches and ATMs. Currently, there is a proposed acquisition of HSBC by RBC and the potential Laurentian Bank of Canada sale offer two case-studies of consolidation between FIs in the banking industry. The assessment of this merger requires information about the nature of banking competition in Canada, in particular the costs and revenues associated with providing banking services, such as cash access points. Thus, the internship will employ a student to complete research looking at the impact RBC acquisition of HSBC on cash access in Canada.
