Development of a safe nanocellulose-based product for cosmetic and wound care applications

Medelys Laboratories is a manufacturer of innovative premium products to improve health ailments and the quality of life. Their commercially available liquid collagen-based products for example are important in pain management, regaining bone strength and improving skin elasticity. Over the past two years, they have newfound interest in a novel strain of bacteria that rapidly produces nanocellulose with applications in wound care and cosmetics. Previous work at the Technology Access Centre in BioInnovation (TACB) at College La Cité over the past year with the partner of the application, Medelys, and collaborator of the application, Axcelon Biopolymers, studied the efficient production of nanocellulose from this proprietary strain and helped to highlight areas of improvement and potential solutions in the process of biofilm and fibril suspension production. The current study aims to accelerate the nanocellulose products to commercialization.
