Tackling the challenge of graph comparison in genomics

This project involves the design and development of a Visual Analytics (VA) tool that will allow
analysts to quickly expose relationships and regions of interest in very large data sets that encode
complicated graphs and networks. The tool’s development will be guided by frequent interviews with
analysts at Aeroinfo/Boeing and the BC Cancer Genome Sciences Centre (GSC), in an effort to
develop a system that will help them assemble genomic data, and discover potentially meaningful
relationships in the cell’s regulatory machinery. Although the domain of application is biological,
graphs and networks are prevalent across fields as diverse as financial systems analysis, social
network analysis, and communications network analysis. Special care will be taken during the course
of the project to ensure the developed VA system will generalize to analysis of multiple domains given
suitable, analyst-specified settings or parameters….
