Distributed Power Generation (DPG) offers a novel approach to reduce power losses. Micro-turbines (MT) are instrumental in the development of a high efficiency DPG system. The major drawback is the associated wasted heat. Increasing the viability of DPG is directly linked with the development of higher efficiency MTs. MTs equipped with a recuperator preheating the […]

Toronto City Council received a petition signed by close to 14,000 individuals calling for Dundas Street to be renamed, citing its namesake Henry Dundas’ role in delaying the abolition of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The petition has led to a broader review of how the City commemorates public figures and events in place names, monuments, […]

In 2012, wind energy in Canada grew by nearly 20% and wind is expected to supply 20% of Canada’s electricity by 2025. Accurate measurement of the wind resource is essential for future wind energy development but current wind resource assessment practices do not adequately measure atmospheric turbulence or stability. These variables affect average windn speeds, […]

Neutron beams are versatile and irreplaceable 21st century research tools. Following the closure of the National Universal Research (NRU) reaction in 2018, Canadian researchers and industry lost key neutron beam capabilities for industrial Research and Development and fundamental research alike. The proposed project is a effort to rebuild neutron beam capabilities in Canada. The design […]

This project is a cooperative arrangement with Siksika economic development. University of Lethbridge researchers are evaluating a range of economic development options for consideration by Siksika. These options are focussed on renewable energy, sustainability, and food security for the nation, and for economic development to further Nation participating in the Alberta and Canadian economies. Siksika […]

Energy storage can help address the intermittency of renewable energies (such as solar and wind power). Different methods were developed to store energy for later uses. D’Arcy Mann, the founder of TESS Research Ltd., developed a method of high temperature thermal storage that would allow surplus power from renewables to be input year-round and given […]

This research will identify opportunities to leverage telematics data to inform policy changes such as safe vehicle operation and fleet operator responsibilities. It will guide the development of telematics data management policies and support key programs that aim to: improve fleet asset tracking, optimize equipment availability/utilization, advance fleet share, and promote safe vehicle operation and […]

The proposed project is to develop a comprehensive tool for mathematical modeling of the hydraulics and biochemical conversions in the sewer network. This tool will be used for the optimization of the control strategy of the chemicals dosing in sewer networks to efficiently and economically mitigate the harmful emissions, such as hydrogen sulfide and greenhouse […]

Sewage collection systems have long been considered as sanitation and hydraulic infrastructure, i.e., a medium for transporting wastewater to the treatment facility. Therefore, the management focus has been mostly on hydraulic performance and the prevention of particle settling/odor development in pipes. Current research extends beyond sewage conveyance into sites of chemical and biological transformation with […]

This project focuses on the development of a tool to monitor electricity use in Quebec households. This tool intends to assess in near real-time the energy use of each appliance (electric space heaters, electric water heaters, etc.) to identify and diagnose its energy usage for providing feedback to utility and customers. Accordingly, several developments and […]

The project involves the conversion of pulp and paper waste into renewable natural gas (RNG) using anaerobic digestion. It is the process in which microorganism converts the organics content into methane, hydrogen gas and carbon dioxide in the absence of oxygen. However, these microorganism are highly sensitive to change in pH, sulphates, organic load and […]
