Physical activity engagement & the intention-action gap in older adults

This research project aims to study the factors which can influence engagement in physical activity in older adults and how it is linked to health. Using data from multiple countries and collected over periods of up to 12 years the research project will look at the influence of socioeconomic and environmental factors on this relationship. The research project will also investigate the individual neuro-psychological factors that influence individuals’ engagement in physical activity with the aim of developing clinical interventions that can increase people’s level of physical activity. This research project will be undertaken with Perley Health as partner organization. Perley Health stand to benefit from the scientific expertise of the project participants and the research conducted as part of this project to further the development of the Centre of Excellence in Frailty-Informed Care and to reinforce research ties with the University of Ottawa.

Peer to Peer (P2P): Speaking Up About Vaccine Safety

The proposed project will evaluate the Peer-to-Peer (P2P) project co-lead by NorWest Community Health Centres (NWCHC) and Dilico Anishinabek Family Care (Dilico). The project evaluation will explore if the interventions utilized by the P2P project have increased vaccination uptake in the identified vulnerable populations in Thunder Bay and District. The project’s efforts in increasing COVID-19 and general vaccinations for vulnerable populations, as well as the effectiveness of using a peer-based intervention to increase vaccinations, will be evaluated. The intern will engage in qualitative research methods such as systematic literature reviews, qualitative interviews, and focus groups to better understand the impacts, strengths, weaknesses, gaps and opportunities of peer-based intervention. Both NWCHC and Dilico are expected to experience benefits as efforts are made to bolster the capacity of various public health approaches to improve demand for and access to vaccines and have a potential impact of public health outcomes and address disparities within northwestern Ontario.

Evaluate the Long-term effectiveness of a Family-based Childhood Obesity Management Program

Generation Health (GH) is a family-based intervention targeting families of children who are off the healthy weight trajectory. The GH is a 10-week program offered across BC where children and their families meet once a week online. Parents will be provided with healthy lifestyle content and will engage in discussions on how to engage in health behaviours, and children will participate in physical activities aiming to enhance their motor skills. Families will also have access to a web portal with content and suggestions of activities to be completed. The Childhood Obesity Foundation will benefit by working with experienced graduate students to the long-term (6, 12 months) effectiveness of GH program.

MNL Municipalities Fiscal Framework Benchmarking Project

Designing the most effective and efficient source of revenue is one of the leading policy challenges in the municipal sector today. Generally speaking, municipalities own and operate 60% of the built public infrastructure in the country, but are limited to approximately 8% of the aggregate tax revenue generated in the country by all three orders of government. The federal government receives 50% of tax revenue and the provincial/territorial (P/T) governments receive 42%.This project is focussed on determining opportunities for municipal revenue reform in Atlantic Canada and capturing this information in a report.

Laser welding process development and optimization for thin Al and stainless-steel foils

In the fabrication of a battery-free water leak detector, packaging process requires to expose the sensor to water in a specific way, while protecting some electronics components on the inside from water. This research is to develop a high-speed and high precision laser microwelding process to fabricate an aluminum or stainless steel foil water-proof housing for the electronics of AquaSensing’s battery-free water leak detector. Firstly, weldability of aluminum or stainless-steel foils, particularly the weld appearance, the defects in welds and the laser welding parameter window, will be investigated to study the feasibility of laser microwelding for water leak detector electronic housing. The optimization of the laser welding process will be conducted to minimize the defects of welds, and fabricate a water leak-free sample. The completion of this research will accelerate the production design and increase the robustness and reliability of partner’s advanced battery-free water leak detector.

Assessing the Impact of the Program Integrity Framework: Engaging Family-Links in the Private Sponsorship of Refugees (PSR) Program in the Context of Program Assurance

Canada’s Private Sponsorship of Refugees (PSR) program has gained a lot of international attention from countries around the world. Since the program’s inception, emerging literature has appropriately captured the increasing shift from the ‘welcoming the stranger’ model to ‘kin-linked’ based sponsorships. Today, linked-sponsorships make up the majority or private sponsorships. Further, in the Fall of 2022 implementation of the Government of Canada’s new Program Integrity Framework (PIF) will begin. While unclear what the implementation of the PIF will mean in practice, many sponsors are skeptical about the framework’s intentions and how it will impact sponsor engagement. This research considers the necessity of program integrity monitoring and the challenges and complexities of monitoring within the context of kin-linked sponsorship.

Enhancing sustainability outlook of livestock feed additives production and use: An integrated and model-based approach

Considering the challenge of feeding a growing population, with an increase in the demand for more animal-source foods, efficient use of resources will be essential. Livestock and aquaculture are major contributors to climate change, being responsible for 14.5% of the global greenhouse gas emissions in addition to nutrient losses, leading to water contamination. However, feed additives have been identified as potential pathway to decrease the environmental impact of animal production, in addition to contributing to food safety and animal health. This project aims to quantify the current environmental implications of the production and use of specific feed additives. It will also identify areas in the production process or use phase when improvement could be achieved and quantify the environmental and economic implications of such improvement pathways. Overall, this project will provide data/evidence for strategic sustainability decisions and models that are applicable to other livestock production systems.

A methodology to leverage seismic risk assessments to inform seismic policy development in the City of Vancouver

Seismic risk reduction planning for existing buildings must begin with a quantitative account of risk, and it must contain an objective basis grounding the various policy options considered within it. This work aims to develop a methodology to generate that objective policy basis, leveraging seismic risk modelling outputs to detail the benefits of various policy options to reduce risk in Vancouver’s 90,000 existing, privately held buildings. The proposed methodology will consider risk in terms of building damage, casualties, recovery time, and disrupted occupants, creating a process to model the reduction across each risk metric for cohorts of buildings. These cohorts will be ranked by their impact upon the desired metrics, allowing for identification of efficient policy strategies from a test set. In effect, this work will allow municipal staff and decision makers to understand the potential for risk reduction and make informed policy decisions, including risk reduction targets, to advance citywide seismic resilience.
