As financial networks grow limiting the spread of illicit funds becomes an increasingly important aspect of security. We model this spread within a network-like structure called a graph and examine how best to defend against the spread of these illicit funds. This problem has been examined in the past and we further that knowledge by restricting the defender’s ability to defend the network, thus allowing our models to behave more similarly to the real world in certain applications.

Design and development of suitable battery packs for medical-drone applications

Sound Antidote is developing medical drones with the help of systems engineering, business and research advisors. These systems require long-haul flight times, which will be the case for some of the expected drone flights. The project opportunity provided is intended to develop batteries that are reliable and provided high energy density for long-flight times without impacting the carrying capability of the drone. The main goal of the project is to design, analyze and package high energy density battery systems for the drone. Key focus area is to in medical systems, using know-how brought in from other sectors.

Que les variétés de tomates disponibles chez les semenciers montréalais soient ancestrales ou nouvellement créées, Ahmed Jerbi va explorer cette agrobiodiversité pour découvrir celles qui répondent le mieux aux conditions de cultures les moins exigeantes en termes d’empreinte écologique et qui seront peut-être aussi les plus appropriées dans un contexte de changement climatique. Operational Optimization and Crop Innovation in Vertical Farming

Vertical farming is an emerging industry driven by the intersection of rising food prices, climate volatility and reduced technology costs. However, there are two major barriers to the widespread adoption and long-term viability of vertical farming among prospective entrepreneurs, farmers, and food businesses: high capital costs associated with turn-key vertical farm systems and limitations to the diversity of crops that have been cultivated. Boreal Greens, a Canadian Ag-Tech innovation company, is developing and prototyping a mid-market, Canadian-made, vertical farming solution with communities and smallholder farmers in mind. In order to design their product to address the two major barriers in the field, Boreal Greens is partnering with Seneca’s School of Accounting and Financial Services to answer two important questions:1) Given the current landscape of Canadian food prices, which crops are most profitable and applicable for cultivation in vertical farms, and 2) what equipment is currently best practice or emerging in the industry to reduce labour and time-intensive tasks? This research will have the prospective intern working closely with academic lead Professor West Suhanic and President of Boreal Greens Brandon Hebor to answer these questions through investigation into a range of market conditions, pricing information, technology scans, and business projections.

Création d’une terminologie des soins de santé et des services sociaux au Québec

Clinia utilise une méthodologie de développement Agile. L’équipe recherche, dans laquelle la stagiaire sera intégrée, est composée d’une gestionnaire produit, d’un chef d’équipe, de plusieurs développeurs en apprentissage-machine, d’un développeur spécialisé en données et d’une analyste de données, en plus des deux taxonomistes.
La méthode agile est appliquée à la lettre pour la durée du stage. La stagiaire travaillera avec la taxonomiste en santé pour les phases d’évaluation des besoins internes avant de procéder à ses analyses et élaborer une méthode. Des rencontres virtuelles bi-hebdomadaire de suivi permettront de bien encadrer la stagiaire quant aux besoins d’affaires.
Une grande flexibilité sera allouée à la stagiaire pour le choix des outils qui pourront l’aider dans son projet. Les différents membres de l’équipe peuvent être mis à contribution pour le paramétrage des outils et le raffinement de la méthode, une fois les tests commencés.

Rechercher et aspirer les sites web des CIUSS, CSSS et des ressources des CSSS comme les CLSC, hôpitaux, CHSLD à l’échelle du Québec.

A High-Efficient High-Reliable GaN-Based Multilevel Inverters for Renewable Energy Application

Burning of fossil fuels causes serious problems including air pollution and global warming. As a result, harvesting and employing of clean and renewable energies including photovoltaic and wind energies are getting vital and necessary. Harvesting of these energies, although, has its own issues. These clean energies should be converted to the proper form of energy and then they can be used. This is why some converters are needed to be designed. In these converters, the efficiency and reliability are two main concerns. The efficiency affects the reliability of the system and as the efficiency increases, the reliability increases too. A higher reliability also leads to a lower maintenance cost. In this project, we will be working on the efficiency and reliability improvement of these converters and we will propose a high-reliable high-efficient converters.

Development of an international consensual method for water use impact assessment in LCA Year Two

This project proposes to lead an international collaborative effort aiming to provide a method based on a scientific consensus to assess water use in Life Cycle Assessment, aligned with the ISO Draft International Standard 14 046 on water footprinting. It will provide industry with a harmonized methodology to compare potential impacts related to water use on a common basis. The deliverables of this project will be accomplished through the involvement of key method developers and stakeholders through the international working group WULCA (Water Use in LCA) of the UNEP-SETAC Life Cycle Initiative.

Next City Video Documents

This applied research project builds directly on discussion generated by the 2021 CivicLabTO Academic Summit, an unprecedented exchange among academics from all eight Toronto-area Higher Education Institutions and representatives of the City of Toronto. Locating and elucidating key questions and opportunities shared during Summit discussions, Next City Video Documents seek to frame Toronto’s civic development post-Pandemic through a series of five to eight shorts videos. These short videos (2-3min) will be shot and edited by student teams working under the direction of a lead researcher (MiTACS intern). Building on OCAD University’s strength as a specialized art, media and design university, this partnership with the City’s Strategic Partnerships office will provide vital representations of unfolding urban situations and civic needs. In so doing, the videos will distill the key outputs from the future focused discussions shared through the CivicLabTO Academic Summit, providing the impetus and focus for future research and research partnerships. The internship is suitable for graduate-level researchers with skills and interests in documentary filmmaking, creative practice-led research, or strategic foresight. The project promises to provide a unique opportunity to work across disciplines and institutions, academic and municipal contexts.

Improved monitoring to mitigate fugitive carbon emissions from industrial-scale CO2 storage

Carbon capture and storage requires a scientific basis for a legitimate social licence to be acceptable to the public as a carbon mitigation activity. This research program will augment groundwater monitoring to identify gas leakage around shallow carbon capture sites by integrating new approaches and analytes. In tandem, it will assess the subsurface occurrence of radon and helium and improve the subsurface understanding at a research site with active injection.
