Contribution to the Shakespeare on screen in francophonia research programme and online database

Erin will work at the the Institute for Research on the Renaissance, the Neo-classical Age and the Enlightenment, a joint research centre (UMR 5186) of the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). She will take part in the Shakespeare on screen in francophonia research programme, which consists of referencing and analysing Shakespeare adaptations and allusions on cinema and television screens in French-speaking countries. Erin will feed the online database: http://shakscreen.org/ by spotting and referencing the Shakespearean aspects and quotations in the films and writing descriptions for each of these references, in English. She will have a list of films to deal with but will also be free to explore other relevant films that will enlarge the corpus. Erin will be supervised by the programme leaders, Nathalie Vienne-Guerrin and Patricia Dorval.

Titanium, Zirconium and Hafnium Hydroelementation Catalysts

Amines and phosphines are organic molecules used in every aspect of modern chemistry. Nonetheless, synthetic protocols for the preparation of valuable asymmetric compounds are limited. The project aims at developing atom- and cost-efficient catalysts that will enable the convenient syntheses of these fundamental chemicals. We will develop catalysts based on titanium, zirconium and hafnium, three abundant, inexpensive and non-toxic metals. They will mediate the transformation of common olefins into new asymmetric amines and phosphines by catalyzing 100% atom-efficient hydroamination and hydrophosphination reactions. The high reactivity of these metals is expected to produce versatile catalysts that will outperform state-of-the-art systems. The project will eventually deliver access to a broad range of heterofunctionalized amines and phosphines that can be used by many as organic reagents or as stabilizing components in organometallic chemistry. The partners in St John’s and in Rennes will benefit from this work to consolidate a new collaboration and to position themselves as key players in a dynamic field of research, yet hardly explored in Canada and in France.

La Nouvelle-France sur les planches parisiennes au XVIIIe siècle: édition critique du «Mariage fait par lettre de change» de Philippe Poisson

Le texte central de ma recherche est la pièce «Le mariage fait par lettre de change» (1735), de Philippe Poisson, une comédie. Si elle a connu un certain succès au XVIIIe siècle, elle a été oubliée depuis longtemps et n’a jamais été éditée sérieusement. En conséquence, personne ne l’a encore étudiée sous l’angle projeté. Ainsi, je pourrais contribuer à la discipline en attirant l’attention sur la littérature souvent négligée de la Nouvelle-France. Je produirai une édition critique du texte en le transcrivant et le comparant avec les trois autres éditions identifiées, tout en notant les variantes. En plus de produire une introduction dans les normes de la discipline, j’interpréterai ce texte en utilisant une approche féministe qui soulignera les attitudes ethnocentriques tout en restant sensible au contexte. Nanostructured Nickel Materials for Clean and Renewable Energy

With the rising concern regarding environmental pollution and greenhouse gases, the demand for clean and renewable energy sources has never been greater. Recent developments in fuel cell technology have been promising; however, these fuel cells may be unsuited for mass production due to the prohibitive cost of the platinum-group metal nanoparticles which are required as electrocatalysts. Thus, there is a pressing need for improvements to fuel cell technology such that they require much less platinum metal. This project proposes the development of nanostructured nickel materials for energy storage and generation technologies as an alternative to the platinum metal-dependent technologies. The lack of nanostructured nickel materials has severely limited the advancement of nickel-based electrochemical technology. We aim to design and synthesize novel nanostructured nickel materials which will find applications in energy and materials sciences. The discovery of these improved nickel electrocatalyst materials is projected to create a new generation of efficient alkaline fuel cells and water electrolysers.

Minéralisation d’effluents chargés en polluants bio-réfractaires d’origine pharmaceutique (le paracétamol) par couplage oxydation anodique et électro-Fenton

L’objectif général de ce projet est de développer une méthode de traitement électrolytique d’oxydation avancée (EOA) et d’optimiser son mode de fonctionnement pour le traitement d’eaux de rejets chargées en micropolluants bio-réfractaires tels que les effluents issus de l’industrie pharmaceutique. Ce procédé implique la mise en œuvre de la réduction de l’oxygène pour promouvoir le procédé d’électro-Fenton à la cathode et l’oxydation de l’eau à l’anode pour générer des radicaux hydroxyles , espèces particulièrement efficaces pour la minéralisation des polluants et micropolluants organiques. Ces travaux devraient permettre de répondre aux objectifs environnementaux de rejets pour ce type d’effluent. La génération in situ d’espèces oxygénées réactives (EORs : OH, H2O2, O3, etc.) et l’utilisation d’électrodes catalytiques offrant la plus grande surface effective possible constituent les deux éléments clés pour oxyder plus efficacement ces polluants résiduels des effluents d’industrie pharmaceutique, soit directement sur la surface des électrodes ou indirectement par les EORs.

An Antarctic NO3 isotope record spanning the last millenium

Nitrate is a major contaminant of modern groundwater and terrestrial ecosystems. It is also involved in the generation and destruction of nitrogen bearing greenhouse gasses. In order to assess how nitrate is cycled in the Earth surface environment, as well as in recent Earth history , it requires the generation of pristine records that record behavior of the nitrogen cycle. This project is unique in that it entails generating a 1000-year record of the isotopes of nitrogen and oxygen trapped in an ice core recovered from East Antarctic. This data will provide a high-resolution record (biannual) of nitrate cycling in the surface environment that will serve as a baseline for understanding the coupling between climate and the nitrogen cycle.

Investigating productive uncertainty in technological intelligence practices

This project aims at investigating productive uncertainty as a determinant factor in stimulating the exploration of innovation. Data will be collected through stakeholder interviews and observations of technological intelligence practices at Université de Bordeaux’s Via Inno lab. Via Inno engages with industrial partners to explore future development opportunities, which present an ideal case study to explore conditions of uncertainty. Uncertainties introduced by the rapid pace of business and technological change drive demand for responsive methods to orient the investment strategies of firms, organizations and communities. While a lot of attention is currently devoted in developing data, computational, and analytical capabilities to facilitate the identification of strategic opportunities, less consideration is given to the influence of how the strategic intelligence itself gets framed and communicated. This study will yield significant theoretical and practical insights on how uncertainty is shaped, represented, and experienced during exploration practices.

Characterization of Naturally-Occurring Neuropathic Pain in Dogs

Clinical experience demonstrates that canine patients commonly suffer from neuropathic pain and little is known to address this issue. Our study aims to investigate different tools for the diagnosis and treatment of neuropathic pain. Forty dogs with naturally-occurring neuropathic pain will be included in a prospective, randomized, masked clinical trial using appropriate inclusion and exclusion criteria. Dogs will be assigned to receive treatment with a drug that is used in humans for neuropathic pain (gabapentin), or gabapentin in combination with an anti-inflammatory drug (meloxicam) in a cross-over design (dogs will receive both treatments during study). QoL, pain scores, client-specific outcome measures, biomarkers of inflammation and QST will be evaluated before and during the study for observation of treatment effect. This study provides insight on the diagnosis of neuropathic pain and may prove the efficacy meloxicam in a new application.

Machine learning in fluid composition quantification

A critical issue in the oil and gas industry is to quantify the composition of fluids flowing back from the hydraulic fracturing process. This quantification is usually carried out by a manual process (frequently via a visual test) to estimate the water and oil produced from a well flow back process. A sample of these onsite tests are sent to laboratories for chemical analysis. This process has been the status quo for decades. This approach is manual, prone to error, and does not lend itself to sophisticated real time analysis. Machine learning techniques have significantly developed in the last decades, and combining with in-depth mathematical basis, it is now capable of producing a revolutionary impact to almost every industrial application. This research project aims at developing a machine learning framework, that can detect the fluid composition based on the sensor data as well as referencing chemical analysis results.

Understanding atmospheric peril risk across re/insurance portfolios

Natural disasters that are associated to the atmosphere (known as atmospheric perils) such as hurricanes, tornadoes and hail, flooding, drought, and wildfire, caused over $100 billion in damage throughout the world in 2015. Insurance companies often cannot afford to be responsible when such catastrophes occur, and so they purchase insurance to protect themselves (called reinsurance) from these large risks. In the case of atmospheric perils, the damage that is caused is spread unevenly throughout the world and strongly influenced by features of the climate system such as the temperature of the ocean. Currently, reinsurance companies do not take advantage of these critical features of atmospheric perils. Our study of how the geographic patterns of atmospheric perils affect our client’s reinsurance investments will enable the partner to better manage its risk, and therefore reduce costs and improve protection to clients.

Development of a simulation model for prediction of performance of an anesthesia circuit using a novel CO2 separation system

Anesthesia is delivered to patients in vapour form, supplied via Mechanical ventilation in closed loop anesthesia circuit. This necessitates the removal of the carbon dioxide (CO2) produced during respiration. Currently, anesthesia circuits use granulate-based CO2 absorbents that react with CO2 to remove it from the gas stream. However, anesthetic vapours also react with the chemical absorber producing toxic bi-products that have been connected to negative patient outcomes. DMF Medical Inc. has developed an early stage prototype device that provides an alternative method for CO2 removal. To finalize device specifications and produce a market ready system, optimization of device performance and material properties is required. In this project, Dr. Hanafi will create a comprehensive and accurate computer model that enables testing a range of mechanical ventilation conditions on different simulated patient conditions to find the optimal design parameters to minimize concentration of CO2 in the system.

Collaborative Service Robot in a Group Home Environment of People with Developmental Disabilities

The vision of this proposed project is to design and build a collaborative service robot that will help people with developmental disabilities (DD) reach their personal goals and achieve greater independence, using existing and new technologies. This will allow the industry partner, JDQ, to advance the type of services provided to people with DD and their caregivers in a group home environment, through its partnership with Developmental Disabilities Association (DDA). This project will support the overall intention of contributing to the creation of better collaborative service robots than exist today, specifically designed to support adults with DD and their families. Ultimately, JDQ and DDA expect the project outcomes to be transferable to health and elder care environments.
