Development of An Alternative Landfill Barrier Material From Treatment Plant Residual Solids

This project will take existing waste material(s), blended with a stabilization agent and create a useful material that can be used as a cover material for a landfill. The waste materials will consist of residual material from municipal water or waste water treatment plants, pulp and paper plants combined with waste materials that are residual from industrial processes such as cement manufacturing, energy generation, etc. The material to be created will be engineered to have desirable properties to act as a suitable cover material replacement for clay in a landfill. These desired properties will include strength, low permeability while also ensuring it is environmentally safe.

The SAVI Smart Edge Deploying D2D with Massive Multiple In Multiple Out (MIMO) Antenna Architectures

The NSERC Strategic Network for Smart Applications on Virtual Infrastructures is a five-year partnership between Canadian industry, universities, researchers, research and education (R&E) networks, and high performance computing centres to investigate the design of future application platforms that will deliver software applications of greater capability and intelligence. These application platforms will be supported by an extended computing cloud, encompassing a virtual converged infrastructure and control software that also serves as a live testbed for exploring novel concepts in application-oriented networking, cloud computing, integrated wired/wireless access, and smart applications. Novel software applications will build on advanced services provided by the platform, including context, mobility, location, identity, social network, media recognition, and intelligence. The SAVI network will involve the academic community in the creation of new content and novel applications.
This MITACS proposal is to support a SAVI internship program that will strengthen the Canadian industrial base in information and communications technology through the preparation of highly qualified manpower with expertise in the design and operation of globally competitive ICT infrastructure and the creation of innovative and disruptive products, services, and applications. The Centre for Operations Excellence Industry Projects consists of eight sub-projects sponsored by four different industry partners. Each sub-project represents an important challenge for its sponsor. These sub-projects include studying alternative models of service delivery for passengers with reduced mobility at an airport, capacity analysis for various cross-functional team design concepts at Boeing, optimizing the scheduling of custodial activities for building operations services, developing a model of the CBSA process to optimize passenger flow through Canada customs at an airport, using data science to improve user experience of Boeing-AeroInfo’s Airplane Health Management system, using modeling to develop an airport congestion risk index for Boeing-AeroInfo, developing text analytics techniques to enable WorkSafeBC to predict and prevent workplace accidents; improving dispatching and production rates with stochastic simulation modeling for Silver Standard’s mining operations.

La microfinance comme alternative pour l’accès aux services financiers pour les entreprises du milieu manquant. Deux perspectives au Québec et en Zambie

Ce projet de recherche consiste en une évaluation d’impact de deux nouveaux outils de financement du secteur privé mis en place au Québec (Microcrédit Desjardins aux Entrepreneurs) et en Zambie (Centre Financier aux Entreprises) par Développement International Desjardins (DID). L’objectif commun de ces 2 programmes est d’octroyer des prêts de taille moyenne aux entreprises qui sont trop grandes pour profiter du microcrédit traditionnel mais pas encore suffisamment développées pour avoir accès aux banques commerciales. En tant qu’administrateur, DID souhaite obtenir une évaluation de leur impact sur l’évolution des entreprises financées (Québec, Zambie) et sur le bien-être des clients et de leurs familles (Zambie). Cette étude consiste à collecter et analyserons différentes données sur les entrepreneurs clients actuels ou potentiels de ces deux programmes. Grâce à des outils économétriques d’évaluation d’impact, nous isolerons l’effet causé par l’accès aux produits et services offerts sur la dynamique de croissance des entreprises clientes ainsi que le niveau de vie de leurs propriétaires.

Modulation of the apelinergic system in Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH): cardiovascular impact of endogenous peptides and Apelin derivate compound with C-terminal modification

Pulmonary arterial Hypertension (PAH) is a severe disease that affects both the pulmonary vasculature and the heart with no curative options. The apelinergic system which can be defined by the cell surface receptor APJ, mostly expressed in the heart and vessels, and its endogenous ligands Apelin and ELABELA appear as a promising therapeutic pathway in the context of cardiovascular dysfunction. Although the beneficial impact of Apelin supply has been well assessed in several experimental model of cardiovascular dysfunction, the potential impact of the recently discovered ELABELA has never been studied in the context of cardiovascular dysfunction/remodeling induced by PAH. On the other hand, agonists acting through the same receptor can be chemically engineered in order to increased their biological efficiency. In the present project and in partnership with IPS therapeutique inc, we propose to evaluate and compare to Apelin-13 the potential cardiovascular effects of the second endogenous APJ ligand ELABELA and originals and optimized compound derivate from apelin structure in the context of PAH.

Processus décisionnel et facteurs de choix de l’emballage primaire des produits périssables

Le projet vise à comprendre le déroulement du processus décisionnel relatif à la sélection de l’emballage primaire qui représente la couche qui entoure directement le produit. Le projet porte particulièrement sur la catégorie des produits périssables de l’entreprise de distribution alimentaire METRO. Plus exactement, le projet cherche à déterminer qui décide quoi ? Comment ? sur la base de quels facteurs et dans quel ordre d’importance ces facteurs sont considérés ? et quel genre d’influences impactent ce processus (des influences internes, externes ou encore les deux) ? Une fois on aura apporté des éléments de réponses à ces questions et qu’on aura cerner les principaux enjeux et contraintes, on proposera des pistes d’amélioration du processus décisionnel de l’entreprise METRO. On développera des recommandations de bonnes pratiques qu’elle pourra adopter tout en tenant compte des piliers de sa stratégie d’affaire dont le respect de l’environnement et la satisfaction de la clientèle.

Implementing Advance Scheduling Technology to Reduce MRI/CT Patient Wait Times

The objective of the research project is to validate a new advance scheduling algorithm for MRI & CT bookings at a partner hospital and to design a scalable approach for future validation and implementation at other sites. The MDP model that books multi-priority patients with varying resource requirements to a single resource will incorporate the ability to reschedule patients, implement overtime and mitigate against cancellations and no-shows. NextUp Care believes that by connecting hospitals, physicians and patients on a common platform, it can optimize scheduling for diagnostic imaging services and reduce average wait times for patients in Ontario (and Canada).

Extraction et analyse de modèles numériques de terrain par interférométrie radar à haute résolution

La topographie de surface est un paramètre important pour des différents domaines (hodologie, géologie, agriculture, …). Contrairement aux méthodes conventuelles, l’interférométrie radar permet de produire des modèles numériques de terrain sur des étendues spatiales importantes, à faible coût, dans un temps réduit et indépendamment de la condition métrologique (comparé au lidar aéroporté). L’objectif général de ce travail est de contribuer à la production de modèles numériques de terrain de meilleure qualité dans les milieux éloignés, comme au nord du Québec, par interférométrie radar. La précision des modèles numériques de terrain obtenus par interférométrie radar aéroportée est d’abord analysée sur différents types de topographie. Ensuite, des données radar satellitaires sont utilisées pour produire des modèles numériques de terrain au nord du Québec. Une analyse comparative est enfin proposée entre : (1) la précision des modèles obtenus à partir des données radar aéroportées et celle obtenue à partir des données radar satellitaires, puis (2) entre les modèles obtenus par interférométrie radar à partir des données radar satellitaires et celle obtenue avec les méthodes conventionnelles.

La prévention primaire des chutes chez les personnes vieillissantes autonomes : développement d’un programme interdisciplinaire multifactoriel

Les chutes chez les aînés sont un problème de santé publique sérieux. Actuellement, les services mis en place pour prévenir l’augmentation du nombre de chutes au sein de la population québécoise s’inscrivent majoritairement en prévention secondaire et tertiaire, pour une clientèle âgée de 65 ans et plus à risque de chute, ou ayant déjà chuté. Ce projet de recherche a pour objectif la mise sur pied d’un programme de prévention primaire des chutes chez une population âgée de 45 ans et plus, ainsi que l’évaluation de son efficacité. Plus précisément, ses objectifs spécifiques sont: 1) de développer un programme interdisciplinaire multifactoriel de prévention primaire des chutes pour une population vieillissante autonome (personne âgée de 45 ans et plus vivant à domicile et n’ayant jamais chuté) et 2) d’évaluer l’effet de ce programme sur les facteurs de protection liés aux chutes. hydrogen, including high pressure tanks, cryogenic conditions or the development of alternative hydrogen storage materials. The local company Hydrogen In Motion is developing new materials for
H2 storage and is looking to explore amine boranes as alternative rechargeable materials. A new 2-D material with promising H2 storage characteristics has been developed and research into the scalable synthesis ofthis material will be explored. A complementary approach focusing on molecular H2 storage will take advantage of dehydrogenation/rehydrogenation of amine boranes with inexpensive, low toxicity early transition metal catalysts.

Les mesures de stations météo et d’équipements intelligents sont de plus en plus disponibles. Ces mesures permettent de caractériser le lien entre les conditions météo, les habitudes des occupants et la consommation d’énergie. La meilleure connaissance de ce lien contribue au développement d’outils permettant d’anticiper la consommation d’énergie. Un réalisme accru de prévision permettrait à Hydro-Québec d’entrevoir d’autres méthodes pour gérer son réseau, évaluer ses programmes ou planifier ses activités.

Cyanide-Free Leaching of Gold Using Iodine/Iodide based lixivinat

Iberian Minerals is a junior mining company, based in Canada. The Company recently acquired Mineworx Technologies, based in Vancouver, British Columbia and is now focused on various mining technologies. One such technology we are developing is an eco-friendly, non-cyanide based leach extraction for gold processing utilizing iodine as a complexing agent. The research and development undertaken will study the feasibility of a new approach to a sustainable process in gold mining, which will see an immediate positive ecological impact on pollution through the non-use of highly toxic cyanide. Our research will additionally investigate faster gold leaching reactions capable of facilitating high metal recovery rates, which is important to the industry.
Iberian Minerals are striving to commercially develop an eco-friendly lixiviant that is at least comparable or lower in cost to cyanide leaching while realizing economically equal or better recovery rates in the processing of gold for worldwide application.
