Covid-19 has brought mental health concerns to the forefront. The basic human need for connection has been explicitly recognized through this pandemic. Additionally, the impact of isolation and loneliness have received mainstream media attention and a recent study released in Dec 2020 states that Canadians’ mental health is eroding as the pandemic continues. As an organization offering mental health counselling, there is significant opportunity for growth and for the support of those around us. Our Founder is often caught up in the “doing” of the work; this results in future planning and strategy falling to the sidelines. The business is reactive instead of consciously proactive. An intern is important to our organization’s future success as that person would be dedicated to establishing a strategic plan for the next 3-5 years. Applying Machine Learning Methods to Air Emission Monitoring

Alberta’s Oil and Gas (O&G) sector plays a critical role in Canada meeting its commitment to the Paris Climate Change Agreement. However, few studies published the actual operation data for extraction operations (schemes), especially fuel consumption data to accurately project greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for development and expansion of O&G projects. In this study, we propose to
1) develop a GHG quantification tool using data science techniques in an integrated development environment – Jupyter Notebook with Python programming language to support aggregated oil and gas operations for their regulatory reporting,
2) apply knowledge discovery in databases (KDD) process to in situ oil sands extraction to discover patterns of energy consumption, GHG emissions, and oil production using unsupervised machine learning techniques.
3) Analyze carbon costs to the oil and gas extraction.

La consultation aupres de grandes entreprises est un eujet relativement etudie et standardise. Or, les PME vivent une realite differente et il pouvoir adapter l’approche en matiere de services-conseils. AUtrement dit, le proket d-etude consiste a developper une approche orientee vers le diagnostic et l’accompagnement de la PME. L’objectif est double puisqu’il s’agit de documenter cette faille au niveau theorique poutr reussir a proposer une grille de lecture renouvelee a la consulation. A partir de l’etude des pratiques/mandats d’un bureau regional de Raymond Chabot Grant Thornston, il sera possible de faire ressortir les besouns en termes de diagnostic et d’accompagnement aupres de cette clientele PME. En testant/adoptant eventuallement ensuite cette approche specifique de consultation, ce bureau regional pourrait devenir acteur incontournable sur le marche, capable d’avoir un effet benefique pour le PME lor de futures interventions.

Peplomer Bulb Shape and Coronavirus Rotational Diffusivity

Recently, we calculated the rotational diffusivity of the coronavirus particle in suspension, from first principles, using general rigid bead-rod theory. We did so by beading the capsid, and then also by replacing each of its bulbous spikes with a single bead. Since the spikes are charged, we followed the well-known polyhedral solutions to the Thomson problem. However, since each coronavirus spike is a glycoprotein trimer, each spike bulb is triangular. By replacing each coronavirus spike bulb with a single bead, our prior work neglects this triangularity. In this work, we will thus replace each bulbous coronavirus spike with a bead triplet, where each bead of the triplet is charged identically. Using the latter to rearrange and orient the coronavirus spikes relative to one another, we shall arrive at the rotationaldiffusivity of the coronavirus particle in suspension, from first principles.
By from first principles, we mean using general rigid bead-rod theory for the aqueous suspension of SARS CoV-2 particles. Our objective, therefore, is to calculate the rotational diffusivity of a detailed SARS CoV-2 structure from first principles.

Advancing Fatigue Risk Mitigation with EEG Fatigue-Detection: A Field Study

Fatigue has been acknowledged as a priority issue in human factors contributing to injury in most industries. Of significant concern are drivers operating haulage equipment in the mining industry, who are exposed to monotonous working conditions. This risk exposure might be mitigated if fatigue can be detected and managed. Recent advancements in wearable technologies proport to detect fatigue through electroencephalography (EEG). Since fatigue detection technology cannot prevent fatigue from occurring, and it cannot mitigate fatigue once it is detected these devices should be implemented within the context of a broader fatigue risk management systems (FRMS). This project will: determine whether live-feedback from an EEG fatigue-detection device can enhance a FRMS; this includes an assessment of usability and uptake by mobile equipment operators.

Burkina Faso Data Use Partnership (DUP) Data Rationalization

The Burkina Faso Data User Partnership is a two-year project with the Ministry of Health (MoH) of Burkina Faso. The aim of the project is to improve the supply of and demand for health data for decision-making at all levels of the healthcare system. A preliminary evaluation, which sought to understand how decisions are being made and the information used to inform these decisions, revealed that there are currently 110 active databases and that the information stored does not meet the needs of decision makers. To address this problem, Cooper/Smith will work with the Ministry of Health to streamline their data, in turn prioritizing what is collected and reducing duplication.
Cooper/Smith is committed to helping shape the future of international development and global health through internships and mentorship. Participating in MITACS and partnering with universities not only aids in fulfilling our mission statement, but also allows us to diversify our team and work with budding researchers from a range of backgrounds and with varying skills.

Blantyre Prevention Strategy Prevention Adaptive Learning Management System (PALMS) Validation

The Blantyre Prevention Strategy is a five-year project that seeks to address HIV prevention in Blantyre, Malawi. As part of the project, a Prevention Adaptive Learning Management System has been produced. The purpose of the PALMS is to act as a benchmarking tool to monitor and evaluate BPS on an ongoing basis, showing the progress of activities, informing stakeholders of when to adjust programs or interventions, and ensuring the overall goal of reduced HIV infections is being achieved. The PALMS dashboard will use data indicators to show project progress. Stakeholders have decided on targets for these data indicators. Using historical data, these thresholds will be validated using statistical methods.

Machine Learning to Optimize Service Delivery in ENCQOR Distributed Fabric

The 5G network provides an innovation in cloud assets delivery that will transform multiple application domains such as health care, autonomous driving, smart cities, Industry 4.0, etc. Relying on the ENCQOR infrastructure (the first 5G network in Canada), this research will apply machine learning to improve network failure detection and optimize network recovery for continuity of service delivery in 5G. This project also addresses a larger goal of integrating college students’ contributions into cutting-edge research and development to implement distributed machine learning algorithms. The proposed research project is used as the building blocks for a new class of Ciena’s network solutions, which will be offered to many world-class operators.

The effect of Granzyme B on photoaging

Aging is a complex, time-dependent process caused by decreased ability of the body to respond to environmental stress. In the case of skin aging, most of the associated changes are the result of sun exposure or ‘photoaging’. As the average age of the western population increases, there has been a substantial increase in interest in studying age related diseases and the causes of photoaging along with combating its effects in order to improve overall skin health and appearance. Breakdown of skin components have been linked to certain enzymes like granzyme B that can be overproduced by sunlight. It is proposed that inhibition of this enzyme may attenuate the effects of photoaging. The aim of this proposal is to investigate the relationship between granzyme B and photoaging. If successful, this research could be exploited by viDA in the development of therapeutic inhibitors to topically treat the effects of photoaging
