Developing a Remote Search Engine for Histopathology Scans

The wide-spread adoption of digital pathology has opened new horizons for histopathology. Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms are able to operate on digitized slides to assist pathologists with different tasks. Whereas AI involving classification and segmentation methods have obvious benefits for image analysis, image search represents a fundamental shift in computational pathology. Image-based search for digitized pathology slides can provide pathologists with unprecedented access to the evidence embodied in already diagnosed and treated cases from the past. Huron Digital Pathology has developed and designed an image search system for histopathology images, called Yottixel. The proposed project is the enhancement of Yoittixel search algorithm by incorporating a novel approximate k-NN technique. The proposed method could enable up-to 10-fold speedup in searching and offer more efficient utilization of computational resources. These enhancements provide competitive advantage to Yottixel as a product, especially in hospitals and labs where computing infrastructure are not sufficient for hosting a sophisticated image search engine on-site. The ultimate goal of the research is to develop Yottixel into a robust and efficient search engine for digital histopathology archives. It has potential to be a screening tool to both speed up and improve the accuracy of cancer diagnoses by pathologists.

Improvement of the capabilities of an analytical instrument and itsapplications in polymer materials characterization and formulation.

Rheolution Inc. develops and commercializes a new scientific instrument dedicated to the mechanical
characterization of materials for research and development and quality control of industrial
polymers. The instrument, called RheoSpectrisTM, uses an innovative technology patented by the
University of Montreal Hospital. Compared to the competing old generation instruments, this unique
technology allows the measurement of material properties over an unexplored dynamic range (20
times wider), very rapidly (in less than 1 second) and without contact. This research proposal
constitutes a part of the strategy pursued by Rheolution Inc. to continuously develop its instrument
capabilities and has three major axes:

Scalable Fraud Detection Methods for Micro-donation Processing Platforms

The goal of this project is to investigate fraud detection methods for micro-donation processing platforms. Fraud detection is a popular topic in both industry and academia, but usually in the context of payment processing. Through this research we aim to develop a practical, scalable and robust fraud detection system for the specific use-case of micro-donation processing in an ecosystem which contains three primary entities consisting of donors, corporations and recipient charities. The partner organization (Benevity) will benefit from this research through improvement of its fraud detection activities.

Mapping Social Media Use in Kyrgyzstan: A Pilot Study

The research analyzes the structures of social networks, the varying uses of social media and information diffusion among social networking sites’ users in Kyrgyzstan as a pilot study and possibly expand in a subsequent project to Central Asia. We will study social media consequences on politics, the rise of populism, democracy, equality, participation, diversity, deliberation, privacy, surveillance, community building, informal social networks, public sphere and everyday life. The information heterogeneity of social media content in Kyrgyzstan will also be analyzed in this research. Using visualizations of complex networks and network matrices, this research will reveal the structure of the network, calling out cliques, clusters, communities, and key participants. Through mapping attribute data and network metric scores this research will also visualize network matrices. While in Kyrgyzstan social media has grown exponentially and has growing significance as a medium where social and political attitudes are shaped, and is the platform where civil activism and volunteering is developed, there is virtually no analysis of content and audiences.

Development of targeted degradation of Nuclear Receptor Binding SET Domain Protein 2 (NSD2) by Proteolysis-targeting chimera (PROTAC) for the study of its role in SARS-CoV-2 infections

The recent outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 associated coronavirus disease, COVID-19, had been declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization. There is still only a minimal understanding of the virus and an absence of effective targeted therapy for its treatment. Epigenetic regulations in cells control the expression of genes without modifications to the genetic codes itself, and epigenetic-targeted therapy development had been widely proposed as a promising approach to antiviral therapeutics. NSD2 is protein involved in epigenetic control to silence genes and has been reported to be upregulated and known to interact with some key proteins in SARS-CoV-2 infected cells. This project focuses on developing a method to precisely target the degradation of NSD2 via a technique called PROTAC. This could provide a first-in-class method for targeted degradation of NSD2 that could be used to study the protein function and to develop potential therapeutics for COVID-19.

Multiple functional nanoscale MOF particles for anticancer drug and siRNA delivery system

Nanomaterials as carriers are very suitable for the delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs in cancer treatment. Because nanomaterials as a carrier platform have strong permeability and retention delay in the treatment of tumors, they can passively target tumor cells. Metal organic framework ?MOF ?is a kind of porous material with large pore size and high specific surface area, which can achieve drug encapsulation. We adjusted the size and morphology of MOF to obtain biocompatible materials with an average particle size of less than 200nm. The surface of MOF was further modified to design a nano MOF@drug system combining chemotherapy, photodynamic therapy and gene therapy.
