Investigation of effectiveness of sewage-based activated carbon (SBAC) for removing poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) from aqueous environmental media

Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are groups of contaminants that have received much attention due to their frequent detection in the environment and potential adverse health effect on humans and animals. PFASs can be removed from water using adsorption processes. Adsorbent produced by pyrolysis of sewage sludge (SBAC) offers a promising sustainable solution for removing PFAS contamination in environmental water (e.g., stormwater, wastewater). This research will investigate the effectiveness of SBAC in removing mixture of PFASs from environmental water. The partner organization will use the research findings to incorporate SBAC as a pollution mitigation strategy in water resource management infrastructures (e.g., wastewater treatment plant, rain garden).

Finance & Business Development Analyst

NIBC Live Media creates case studies and financial models for business students and professionals looking to work in investment banking.
It also supports and helps fund the National Investment Banking Competition held online and in-person in Vancouver, which is designed to help graduate talent from UBC and other cities connect with investment banking recruiters globally. The intern will assist with the expansion and innovation of an e-commerce platform, negotiation of new marketing partnerships as well as implementation of existing and new marketing strategies aimed at expanding the online user base and international competitor base of NIBC LM.
Additionally, the intern will also assist with recruiting additional staff, consultants and volunteers to assist with event planning logistics, subject to new developments in the pandemic situation.

Workers’ Specialty Legal Clinic (WSLC): Ensuring Access to Justice for Disadvantaged Workers

There are three legal clinics funded by Legal Aid Ontario that addressed the needs of workers. There is a need to better understand the work of the legal clinics and the needs of the populations they serve in order to guide their ongoing work. The objective of this project is to co-design a framework of collaboration, partnership and coordination to guide the work of the three legal clinics to ensure access to justice for disadvantaged workers. Interns will be involved in reviewing the literature, consulting with staff, clients and other stakeholders, and engaging in a co-design process. The findings will identify the needs of workers in Ontario, and highlight how the clinics can work together to ensure access to justice for disadvantaged workers.

Combination of multi-horizon models for demand forecasting

This project aims to develop a retail demand forecasting model that can both handle the long-term and short-term forecasting, and adjust its parameters as more data come in. General long-term prediction models are relatively precise because the context often remains same over time, but can not quickly adapt to unforeseen events, like the global pandemics. It is then necessary to develop model with multi-horizon perspectives. With the understanding and results achieved by this project, accurate and real-time improvement solutions could be proposed and implemented. It therefore makes economic sense to delve into understanding the travel behaviors of customers and then adjusting the retail practices if unforeseen events occur. This project is expected to produce practical results benefiting the public in the form of improved customer experience, increased incomes, and analysis of COVID-19 propagation containment, etc.

Design and Validation of an Ear Canal Simulator for EVestG Evaluation

Electrovestibulography (EVestG) is a novel neural diagnostic tool to identify various
neurological disorders. The signal amplitude of interest in EVestG recordings is in the sub ?V
range; therefore EVestG demands a very low noise signal acquisition protocol.
The proposed research is to design, develop and validate an artificial ear-canal that simulates
the electrical noise conditions that exist when taking EVestG measurements by associated
bio-signal amplifiers. Such a simulator will allow the rapid, rational and accurate refinement
of such amplifiers and tympanic electrode; it will also allow improvements to be made to the
developed signal extraction software algorithms. Furthermore a more qualitative approach to
identifying good from poor recordings when evaluating various operational scenarios will be
investigated, which subsequently will be translated to best practices in EVestG Clinical
Measurement protocols. Once the artificial ear-canal is constructed, ultra low noise bio-signal

Health economic modeling of Ulipristal Acetatein the treatment of uterine fibroids in theCanadian setting

Given the public health-care system in Canada, many drugs are paid through by the provincial drug
plans. Our government makes decisions on which drug to pay for through a process known as health
technology assessment whereby manufacturers submit a document that details the clinical, economic
and other aspects (e.g. ethical, social) relating to their drug.
Within the economic section of this document, an economic model is constructed to evaluate medical
alternatives. The goal of any economic model is to provide an accurate and reliable comparison
between competing drugs in terms of their costs and clinical outcomes. Currently, a global economic
model has been constructed for a drug called ulipristal acetate for the management of uterine fibroids.
However, to make drug funding decisions, Canadian policy-makers will require a model that reflects
Canadian practices. Therefore, in this internship, the objective is to evaluate the existing global
economic model and make the necessary changes to convert the model to a Canadian perspective.,,,TOBECONT’D

COVID-19 Teaching and Learning Transition Project

As people and institutions around the world are incurring the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, education has felt a large blow. This blow is not only felt by students in post-secondary education who are needing to be educated, but also by instructors, administrators and staff who are all being transitioned into the online format.
For our study, we are looking to collect and analyze readiness data from members of the Ontario Tech University to explore how ready they were to transition in terms of teaching and learning to an online format, as well as their perceptions of their experiences. By doing so, we will be able to investigate the digital competence of individuals in the OntarioTechU community in pre- and post-COVID online teaching and learning contexts, and in turn, glean useful information from the transitional experiences of those involved.

The Impact of Cultural and Economic Factors on Play and Purchase Decisions for Tabletop Games

Wiggles 3D is a company that has set its goal to create relevant, inclusive, and entertaining tabletops games that are accessible to all who may find them of interest. However, much of game research has focused on a user group’s life stage or the occasion at which a game is played, while not so much on cultural aspects, such as players’ ethnicity or the cultural context of their lifestyle. This lack of understanding of the impact of cultural differences on attitudes, behaviours, and habits that emerge in tabletop gameplay marks a significant research problem, because in order to create more inclusive and relevant games, it is key to understand cultural differences. In an era where equality and respect remain more difficult to achieve than ever, board and tabletop games can be a medium that allows racial-ethnic diversity and cultural expression.

Unifying single-image lighting estimation

We present a method for automatically estimating the lighting conditions from a single image. As opposed to most previous works which proposed methods that deal with individual aspects of the problem (e.g. indoors vs outdoors, parametric vs non-parametric), the proposed method unifies these ideas into a single, coherent framework. Our method will automatically estimate both parametric (individual light sources) and non-parametric (environment maps) lighting representations from both indoor and outdoor images. To this end, we will develop a novel deep learning architecture to automatically learn the mapping between an input image to its lighting conditions in an end-to-end fashion, by relying on a large dataset of indoor and outdoor high dynamic range images for training. The method will be quantitatively evaluated and compared to the most relevant approaches from the literature.

Studying the oxygenation of 3D printed pancreatic tissues

Most people with type 1 diabetes control their blood sugar levels through frequent blood glucose monitoring and insulin injections or infusion. Insulin therapy is life-saving but also life-altering and leads to decreased life expectancy. Instead, insulin-producing cells could be transplanted in devices which would prevent their rejection by the immune system. The design of these devices must take into account oxygen supply to the graft, which becomes more problematic in human-scale devices compared to studies conducted in animals such as mice. Aspect Biosystems is developing pancreatic tissue devices fabricated by 3D bioprinting live insulin-producing cells. The objective of this project is to develop and implement a system to study oxygen profiles in these tissue patches. Ultimately, this project could lead to a new therapy to treat diabetes which would be long-lasting and require little to no daily intervention.
