Advancing Community Safety: A Comprehensive Exploration and Development of Culturally Relevant Strategies for Rural and Urban Indigenous Communities

This research is intended to improve community safety and crime prevention in urban and rural Indigenous communities. Currently, community safety encounters numerous pressing Indigenous related challenges such as knowledge gaps concerning factors influencing safety and crime prevention within Indigenous communities, as well as efforts toward decolonizing community safety. This research initiative aims to develop culturally appropriate and evidence-informed strategies for planning, practice, and evaluation in community safety and crime prevention within Indigenous communities. It will involve a systematic review of academic and grey literature, interviews with subject matter experts and community partners, sharing circles with Indigenous Peoples, and the creation of contextually relevant models. Leveraging the Canadian Centre for Safer Communities’ (CCFSC) extensive network, comprising over 120 member communities and 1000+ safety practitioners, this research seeks to disseminate best practices and strategies for Indigenous community safety and decolonizing approaches.
