The main objective of the project by both interns (with tasks defined for each in the timelines) is aimed at the field of building sustainable water resiliency, adaptation and management with the following specific sub-objectives:
• To evaluate monitoring technologies of eutrophication on water reservoirs.
• To evaluate technologies for prevention and remediation of eutrophication in inland waters.
With the above main objectives, the project aims to answer the following two important research hypotheses: (1) Aquatic biome structure can become the mainstream tools to assess the eutrophication level, thereby evaluating the effectiveness of eutrophication control techniques in lakes and reservoirs. (2) Membrane filtration techniques and some auxiliary solutions (i.e., sediment resuspension) can help remediate the eutrophication in tropical lakes and reservoirs, which are expected to receive increasing loads of external nutrient pollutants and difficult-to-control sediment over the time. This remediation methodology may be tested for nutrient-rich wastewater and ultimately contribute a useful solution in water security and carbon emission reduction.
