Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and carbon sequestration

Using simplified language understandable to a layperson, provide a general, one-paragraph description of the proposed research project to be undertaken by the intern(s) as well as the expected benefit to the partner organization. (100-150 words)
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are essential for plant growth, yet their genetics are very poorly understood. The proposed research aims to identify the genetic and carbon sequestration potential of AMF strains currently available and newly produced using innovative technologies. The ultimate goal is to determine if a certain AMF genotypes can be more beneficial in carbon sequestration. This work will be done by combining a variety of molecular techniques and greenhouse experiments aimed at providing the necessary quality control of the newly developed AMF strains.
