Assessing Parent and Child Development in the IPALS Program

Families can play an important role in helping prepare their children to learn to read by engaging in activities that support pre-literacy skills. Not all parents are aware of their abilities to help their children however, and this is often especially the case in immigrant families, where cultural practices surrounding education – especially the families role in education – can be different. Decoda Literacy Solutions (DLS) leads community-based programs that help immigrant families learn more about literacy supporting practices they can do in the home, and gives families the knowledge, tools, and confidence to participate in Canadian community and educational institutions like libraries and schools. This study will help DLS evaluate their program by looking at child and family-based outcomes using both standardized measurements and interviews. The goal is to understand the efficacy of the program, in order to help support literacy for all Canadians.
