Building Trust and Indigenous Inclusion within Environment and Water

The City of Regina is looking to increase Indigenous participation in our municipal government and create a more inclusive environment. The student will gain an understanding of wastewater, drinking water, landfill and environmental work to better position themselves for future jobs either at the City or within an indigenous community. They will also help identify ways the City can incorporate Indigenous knowledge into our work and improve our messaging on these topics to the Indigenous people who call Regina home. This will help make sure important messages are reaching those they need to. The position will help to develop technical people in the water, wastewater and environmental fields and foster trust between the City of Regina and the indigenous community while also providing feedback on ways to weave indigenous worldviews into processes. The first step towards this is for the intern to help with the regular processes and work needed to keep the City compliant with its provincial permits to operate, meet environmental regulation, and help improve messaging to residents in terms of lead in drinking water and waste diversion.

In addition to helping throughout the year, by the end of the work term the intern will provide a short report on ways the City can introduce indigenous worldviews into its environmental and potable water process.
