Cairo’s Public Space Problem: A Historical Overview

“Cairo’s Public Space Problem: A Historical Overview” aims to study the development and de-development of urban sites allowing the free gathering of Egyptians from different classes during the first half of the twentieth century. It explores the different forces at play–local and global, popular and state–in determining the shape of Cairo’s public squares, parks, and other open spaces. This project contributes to our contemporary efforts to grapple with potentially explosive urban problems often exacerbated by climate change by offering a long view onto the question of inhabiting the city. Since Concordia and LSE are urban institutions with a major footprint in their respective cities, the research should be of some significance to these institutions.
