Canada, New and Emerging Technologies and the Indo-Pacific Region

The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) is seeking two Mitacs interns to support the organization in two of its ongoing research projects that are focused on leading-edge technologies: (1) advancing regional knowledge and cooperation on technology-related policy issues, including artificial intelligence (AI); and (2) investigating ‘emerging issues’ that will help define cooperation between Canada and Asia, in this case possibilities for state or private sector cooperation in space.

The key objectives for the Mitacs interns will be to have a better understanding of (1) how the economies that comprise the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 21-economy grouping can more sustainably power the digital economy, including by focusing on data centres; and (2) the geopolitical significance of Asia’s space race, including its impact on regional security, space governance frameworks, and Canada’s role in emerging multilateral agreements.

The projects will benefit the partner organization by supporting its ability to conduct analysis and identify policy implications in two important high-tech domains. In addition, the Mitacs interns will make valuable contributions to our regional stakeholder engagement and written analysis and output.
