Cardiac Surgery among the Frail and Elderly Towards Optimal Decision Making

The impact of frailty on the ultimate functional recovery, independence, and quality of life among elderly patients undergoing cardiac surgery is not known. This study was done to explore the association between frailty and cardiac surgery outcomes. We will investigate independent living status and health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) in frail, elderly patients undergoing cardiac surgery using a more sensitive measure of frailty than provided in our previous work. We anticipate that frail patients will experience higher rates of mortality; major complication; and prolonged institutional care. These outcomes will inform future decision making processes surrounding cardiac surgery for frail elderly patient.
