In 2024, Tourism Yorkton hosted a Guided Historical Cemetery Walking Tour, based on the book, “Yorkton Cemetery Walking Tour” published in 2000. Tourism Yorkton’s cemetery tour was well-attended and attendees inquired about the availability of different guided tours within the cemetery. These responses to the tour demonstrate the public’s desire to learn more about the stories in the cemetery and the history of Yorkton. The cemetery hosts many notable interments, is a source of historical facts and Yorkton folklore, is the oldest park in the city at over 100 years, and includes a section devoted to local veterans. The City of Yorkton supports the creation of an updated version of the cemetery walking tour information to both preserve local history and spark renewed interest in one of Yorkton’s primary historical locations. The City of Yorkton seeks an Intern Cemetery Historian to develop three new cemetery tours based on notable interments at the cemetery, historical facts and folklore of the cemetery, and the dedicated veterans’ section within the grounds. The new tour information would be made available both in print and online for residents and visitors of Yorkton to access and use on-demand as self-guided tours and as a source of local history.
