Conversion of underutilized sea cucumber by-product (flower) to nutrient supplements

The most common sea cucumber (SC) found in the North Atlantic Ocean is orange footed Cucumaria frondosa. SC is packed with numerous high-value nutraceutical and pharmaceutical components. During SC processing, flowers are separated as by-products representing around 8-10% of the live weight and sold at a very low price. These by-products are rich sources of proteins, vitamins, minerals, and biologically active compounds that may benefit overall health by combating several infectious and degenerative diseases. Therefore, the proposed project will develop nutritional supplements from SC flowers. This study will allow better utilization of SC, extend SC market and improves the NL economy by creating new opportunities.
