Culture of Outports

In 2010, ERA Architects initiated the Culture of Outports program that explores the adaptive reuse of outport communities scattered along the coastline of Newfoundland and Labrador. Culture of Outports uses research, design, and planning to foster livable communities in Newfoundland’s historic outports. The project proposes that an understanding of the unique history and character of these communities is essential in order to successfully plan and manage their future evolution, post the 1992 cod moratorium and other restrictions on the traditional fisheries. The first stage of our work is a research study and production of a Cultural Background Report. This research project will outline the community’s historic evolution, produce cultural mappings, context plans and an inventory of tangible and intangible cultural heritage resources that may include buildings, structures, cultural landscape features, fishing and shipbuilding sites, changes in industry and infrastructure. The report will also identify community values and priorities and will suggest opportunities for sustainable development and long-term growth within the community.
