This project aims to develop lignocellulosic nanomaterials from Canada’s rich forest fibers for packaging applications. With the banning of single use plastic, more and more paper-based packaging products are developed. However, most of the paper-based packaging products do not have satisfied water-resistant performance. To enhance such performance, lamination using plastic or coating with toxic coating materials are needed. Here, we propose to develop a sustainable coating material using lignocellulosic biomass. The technology developed in this project will be utilized by the partner organization to coat on paper-based products. The partner will benefit significantly from this project as it is actively seeking for sustainable solutions that can be used in modifying paper-based packaging products. There are huge market with the paper-based packaging products with the banning of single use plastic in Canada. Therefore, the company want to shift from their petroleum-based packaging products to paper-based packaging materials.
