Developing ethical training for long-term care through narrative

The project will recruit and interview staff at a number of long-term care (LTC) facilities about their experience of making difficult, ethical decisions. Materials from these interviews will be used to write a number of case studies, which participants will then discuss in focus groups. All interviews and focus groups will be recorded and transcribed. These will then be analyzed for content (what are the difficult decisions faced by LTC staff), form (how do they structure ethical issues and ethical decision making), and process (how do they reason ethically). Using the data and analysis from this part of the project we will design training materials aimed at enhancing ethical awareness, sensitivity and reasoning – eg case studies, reflective exercises, educational content – to be used as a stand-alone training module (online or available via DVD) or as part of existing ethics training. Staff will be recruited to use the materials and will be asked to complete the training module over a period of six months. They will participate in focus groups to discuss a number of case studies. These focus groups will be recorded and analyzed as per the groups above.
