Enhancing Inclusivity in Caregiver Peer Support: A Case Study of Promising Practices to Expand Outreach and Service Uptake Among Diverse Communities

The proposed project will help the Family Support Institute of BC (FSI) improve how they reach and support families from diverse backgrounds, like Indigenous communities and newcomers, who care for children with disabilities. By studying FSI’s current efforts—such as using translators and creating Indigenous-led mentorship programs—the research aims to discover effective strategies for making peer support more inclusive and accessible. The project will involve interviews, observations, and analysis to identify challenges and find solutions, such as improving communication, strengthening community relationships, and ensuring that peer supporters understand cultural differences. The results will help FSI better serve diverse families and could be useful for other organizations trying to do the same.
