For the past two years, Kerry’s Place Autism Services has been developing a tool to measure compatibility between housemates on the autism spectrum in a group living setting. The Group Living Compatibility Assessment Tool (GCAT) is to be used as a guide to identify whether or not two persons are likely to cohabitate safely. This project will evaluate if the GCAT includes all the relevant areas of compatible incompatibility between future housemates and environments for autistic adults (e.g., person’s sensory preferences, medical and behavioural profile, general house requirements, and lifestyle and social interactions). We will also determine if the GCAT is considered appropriate based on feedback from professionals, self-advocates and their families. The information gained from the GCAT will then inform areas for intervention to improve compatibilities, such as the physical environment, skill development, daily activity schedules, and social interactions, and create more harmonious living situations and improved quality of life.
