Exploring the Social Integration of Racialized Newcomers in Rural Alberta: A Community-Based Project

This project aims to address the current gaps in the literature by focusing on the social and cultural dimensions of integration for racialized newcomers in rural communities in Alberta. This qualitative study will conduct one-on-one interviews with newcomers in 2 rural communities in Alberta. The intern will work with local community-based organizations to help identify research participants. The research will focus on racialized newcomers that fall under family class and economic immigrants. This project seeks to answer the following question: What are the experiences of newcomers living in rural Alberta communities with respect to social and cultural integration? Through Conversation Cafes, the intern will also collect information to answer the question: What strategies or initiatives do newcomers identify as helping support and create a welcoming and inclusive community? This work is important in supporting and improving integration efforts in rural communities.
