In the transition from fossil fuels to the new energy economy, hydrogen is forecasted to play a larger and larger role. The research question addressed by my project is focused on evaluating the economic, technical and environmental implications of producing hydrogen from municipal solid waste (mixed plastics, wood and cardboard waste) in Alberta. At a high level this project will provide me with a solid working understanding of the many factors that are driving both the production, transportation and utilization of hydrogen. The goal of this project is also aligned with the objective of the Transition Accelerator as the partner organization to support Canada’s transition to a net-zero future while solving societal challenges. With a focus on the conversion of Municipal Solid Waste to hydrogen, with carbon capture and storage, my project directly leads to significant societal benefits, from waste reduction to GHG emissions reduction, as well as supporting the drive to net zero and supporting the Canada wide waste strategy on zero plastics. While focused on the Alberta market, the skills, knowledge, collaborations and technology advancements that result from my project have applications domestically and globally, providing me with effectively unlimited opportunities for my future career.
