Feeding strategies to enhance the sustainability of pig production

Novel feeding strategies may be effective alternatives for mitigating the environmental impacts of pig production. Lowering dietary crude protein levels, optimizing nutrient use efficiency, and the use of exogenous enzymes are some nutritional strategies recognized to decrease the use of feed ingredients with high environmental impacts, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and other harmful components. However, little is still known about the potential environmental impacts of producing pig feeds through the comparisons of different feeding strategies. Therefore, this research project aims to assess feeding strategies that can mitigate the environmental impacts of pig production. This project will propose improved feeding practices to ensure the resilience and sustainability of pig production. On one hand, this research will help the sector to reduce GHG emissions towards net-zero emissions to increase its resilience. On the other hand, this project will also help the swine industry optimize the use of nitrogen and phosphorus throughout the production chain.
