Full-filling the promise of sablefish genomics: Parentage Analyses, Whole Genome Sequencing, and Genome Prediction

The goal of the partnership is to develop genomic tools to enhance BC’s new sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria) aquaculture industry. Specifically, we will expand the parentage analysis project launched in 2019, produce a new genetic test that we can use to determine the sex (male vs female) of each fish, and use whole genome sequencing to identify sets of genes, that is, ‘genetic signatures’, associated with differences in fish growth rate and morphology. These genetic tools will allow us to identify males and females that when crossed, produce offspring with i) improved chances of survival in the aquaculture setting, ii) higher growth rates, and iii) better health. This research will ultimately help us develop a domesticated sablefish. The project is a collaboration between researchers at UVic, Golden Eagle Sablefish (GES), and the KA:’YU:’K’T’H’ and CHE:K:TLES7ET’H’ First Nations.
