Health Technology Assessment: The impact of clinician input on drug funding decisions

CADTH’s recommendations are based on clinical and economic evidence which assist in making an informed decision on the optimal use of health technologies3. However, this evidence does not always evaluate outcomes that patients and physicians deem important. By incorporating patient and clinician input, the clinical and practice perspectives of the unmet need are becoming reflective of the current reality.
The findings of a targeted literature search demonstrated high levels of clinician engagement in oncology since 2016. However, for the newly implemented process of incorporating clinician input in non-oncology drug funding decisions, the levels of engagement have been very limited2.
To determine the impact of clinician input on drug funding decisions, an analysis of the drug funding recommendations in both oncology and non-oncology will be conducted to quantify the levels of engagement and qualify the impact of clinician input on different categorized parameters.
A comparative analysis will determine if there is an association between the CADTH and NICE’s procedure to the level of engagement and impact of clinician input. With the collected data, potential tactics to increase awareness for clinician engagement will be suggested.
