Improved detection of pathogenic E. coli

This project is going to evaluate an experimental media for improved detection of pathogenic E. coli, the same type of E. coli that led to the recent outbreak in Calgary daycares that affected approximately 320 children. We
will be rigorously testing the new media by evaluating the abundant E. coli present in the feces of feedlot cattle.
We will also compare the ability of the new media to the current industry gold standards for detection of pathogenic E. coli. We hope that the new media finds all the potentially disease-causing E. coli and more identified by the
current industry standard methods. If the new media works as expected, it will streamline detection of pathogenic E. coli from food products and hopefully reduce future disease outbreaks and product recalls.
