Improving Shelter Experience for Indigenous Women

The current project aims to look at Indigenous women’s experiences seeking help for intimate partner violence (IPV) in crisis and second-stage women’s shelters. Resolve’s previous study demonstrates that rural women, including rural Indigenous women, experience a lack and a shortage of IPV-related services (Kardashevskaya et al., 2022). In addition, services may not be culturally safe to meet the needs of Indigenous women seeking help (Giesbrecht et al., 2022; Jackson et al., 2015; Misra et al., 2022). In this project, we aim to explore the experience of Indigenous women seeking help in women’s shelters. As part of looking at Indigenous women’s experiences, we also aim to explore Indigenous and non-Indigenous service providers experiences helping and supporting Indigenous women access Indigenous and non-Indigenous-led women’s shelters. The research findings can inform policymaking about women’s shelters and help inform women’s shelters about how to implement a culturally safe service.
