Malassezia in chronic inflammation and cancer

Malassezia species are amongst the most abundant fungi in humans, found mostly in mucosal surfaces and on the skin. However, Malassezia can cause damage when present in tissue in Crohn’s disease and pancreatic cancer, but knowledge of Malassezia’s involvement in diseases of internal organs remains fragmented and incomplete. The project will involve determining if Malassezia are present at the site of multiple autoimmune diseases and cancers. Several methods will be used including staining using antibodies and other molecular tools. Also, immune response to Malassezia will be evaluated in these diseases at the humoral (antibody) and cellular levels, using state-of-the-art approaches.
