Management of Powdery Scab of Potato in Alberta

In 2022, the potato industry contributed $2.87B to the Canadian economy and $2.31B to the Alberta economy. Powdery scab has been present in Alberta for decades but because of no above-ground symptoms it has been ignored and no registered products are available to mitigate it. Syngenta suspectsthat the pathogen’s population levels are increasing because of no available treatment. They also need a site with disease which is not possible in Guelph, so they need to have trials in Alberta. The main benefit to the partner organization is that arm’s length research trials are required to expand label uses of fungicide products. In addition, Syngenta has research personnel in Guelph, but not in Alberta and data from Alberta sites are required for product registration. The intern can provide support for the field research while learning about powdery scab in Alberta.
