Managing Cumulative Effects of Tourism in Gitga’at Territory

The North Coast of British Columbia is a site of increasing industrial development, whose impacts pose an increasing threat to the health and well-being of Gitga’at people and their Territory. Though there are numerous monitoring programs to assess these impacts, Gitga’at have raised concerns about certain activities, such as tourism and recreational fishing, are currently overlooked. This project will use Gitga’at knowledge to better understand how visitation has changed throughout recent history, and what impacts visitors have on the people, land, and water. These questions will be explored through interviews with Elders and key knowledge holders conducted on location at significant cultural sites, to draw on place-based memory and personal history.
