Managing ecosystem components for Southern Mountain Caribou recovery in British Columbia.

Southern Mountain Caribou populations have undergone severe range contraction and local extirpations. Efforts to conserve and restore caribou populations have been widespread with varying degrees of efficacy. The research plans outlined in this proposal were developed in response to specific questions about the implications of caribou-based recovery policy, the efficacy of individual management policies for recovering caribou and prioritizing methods for maximizing habitat protection gains for economic and opportunity costs. First, how have past predictions of caribou recovery manifested given the realized changes of habitat quality and what can we learn from this to adapt future management initiatives? Does moose harvest policy reduce predator management intensity? How can landscape restoration be prioritized for maximum conservation efficacy while considering economic investment?
