Modelling return on investment for women’s health research in Canada

Health research benefits society by improving prevention, diagnosis and treatment and helping people to live healthier, more productive lives. More than half of the Canadian population is women but only 6% of federal government funding for health research goes to female-specific health topics. Other countries, estimate that investing in women’s health research offers very high return on investment (250%-1000%). We will develop a Canadian-specific model to estimate return on investment for women’s health research. We will test the model using sexual dysfunction and genito-pelvic pain, health issues that affect many more women than men and for which women are less likely to be offered science-based treatments. The model will contribute to evaluating the BC Women’s Hospital Centre for Pelvic Pain and Endometriosis’ research-based multidisciplinary care model.
