There is a significant waitlist for clients experiencing cognitive impairment (which can be due to a number of reasons) to receive clinical care. Symptoms may include impairments to attention and executive functions (higher-level cognitive abilities supporting focused task performance) or functional (e.g., vocational or activities of daily living); symptoms may be exacerbated in those who have been impacted by infection by the COVID-19 virus. Based on this need, Baycrest researchers have developed the Goal Management Training™ (GMT) program, which incorporates decades of neuroscientific research on executive functions. Initially developed for people with brain injuries and aging, GMT has become a world-leading standardized, evidence-based intervention, with over 20 years of research demonstrating effectiveness across a broad range of conditions. The GMT program serves both patients under the care of therapists, as well as those who do not have access to professional care. However, the reach of the current therapist-guided GMT program offerings is limited, which means individuals who could benefit from the program and return to society as productive members and with re-gained quality of life is also limited.
