Speech Recognition for 9-1-1 Calls and Long Audio Clips

This research project has two goals. The first goal is to design and test software that will automatically transcribe 9-1-1 emergency calls and interpret their meaning with respect to the central facts of an emergency (who, where, and what occurred) as well as possibly when, why, and how the emergency occurred. The second goal is to design and test software that will automatically transcribe long recorded conversations into English text. By dividing a conversation into sensible pieces, each piece can be transcribed using existing software. The Edmonton Police Service receives much information in voice form, and this research project will potentially increase their ability to handle such information more efficiently in the future than at present. The research directly addresses the Edmonton Police Service’s two most pressing needs for cheaper transcription that cannot be met by existing software.
