Strengthening Marine Protected Areas in Atlantic Canada and internationally by advancing the integration of social considerations within planning, implementation and management

This project aims to improve the implementation of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Canadian Atlantic, and abroad, by advancing the integration of social equity considerations in MPAs design, implementation and management. The project integrates two case studies. The proposed Eastern Shore Island in Nova Scotia (Canada), and the Iroise Marine Natural Park in Brittany (France). Included in both case studies will be similar questions that explore social equity considerations in two different marine conservation processes: expectations linked to the future implementation of MPA – Canada case study; experiences linked to the long process of implementation and management of an already established MPA – France case study. The questions will explore experiences, lessons, challenges and opportunities from practitioners point of view, and viewpoints from key actors from within the local communities. These two case studies will generate comparative insights that will contribute to marine conservation in Atlantic Canada and France, and further the understanding human dimensions of MPAs in developed contexts.
