Shawcor aims to be a leader in the development of sustainable pipelines for the clean transport of fluids at expanded temperature and pressure ratings. There is a significant interest in need to expand the specification of their reinforced thermoplastic pipes (RTP) to higher service temperatures and pressures of 100 °C and 1500 psi. Previous research activities between Shawcor and the University of Toronto have concluded that current legacy products utilizing high-density polyethylene (HDPE) liners are not sufficient to achieve these extended service ratings. Extensive research between the two teams has concluded that the mechanical stability and permeation resistance of HDPE is insufficient and compromises the integrity of the reinforcement layer which is critical to the overall strength of the pipe. In this context the primary objective is to develop a new class of multi-material structured and blended liners which achieve the required performance for the targeted temperature and pressure ratings while being lower in cost compared to liners constructed as a single layer engineering thermoplastic. Ultimately this will position Shawcor as a leader in the development of novel pipe technologies offering safer transport of fluids at extreme temperatures and pressures for a longer service lifetime.
