The Changing Pattern of Retirement in Northern BC: Implications for Healthcare Policy and Planning

Providing timely, effective and accessible healthcare is a major challenge for healthcare systems across Canada.
This is more challenging for healthcare systems serving the needs of populations living in rural and remote areas
such as northern British Columbia. The Northern Health Authority is tasked with providing healthcare services to
over 300, 000 people living in diverse communities scattered across the northern half of the province British
Columbia. To assist Northern Health in meeting the demand for healthcare services with reliable planning and
evidence-based decision making, this project will provide a comprehensive projection of future healthcare needs
in northern BC by building an appropriate model that takes account of the complexities of the healthcare system
and the unique demographic, geographic, and socioeconomic conditions of northern British Columbia, with an
eye on the emerging pattern of migration from southern part of the province to the northern part.
