The effect of motivation on foreign speech performance

As a result of globalization, foreign language communication has become increasingly important in many countries. Vietnam has been going through drastic economic surge and globalization in recent years, so effective teaching methods for foreign language based on
scientific evidence are imperative for developing the country. This project will explore the role of motivation on Vietnamese learners’ foreign language communication in English and Korean, i.e. two of the most widely studied languages in Vietnam. When speaking a foreign language, you want to project ideas and get meaning across (approach), while you try not to make errors or lose your face (avoidance). Therefore, motivation in foreign language speaking involves different directions: moving forward to communication goal and moving away from linguistic problems. This project targets the different types of motivation on foreign language speech performance. The findings will shed lights on effective ways of teaching foreign language especially for Vietnamese learners learning English or Korean.
