The Line that Separates: Identifying High Potential Franchise Systems

The success of franchising relies on individual franchisees’ ability to evaluate and compare diverse franchise systems, prior to making an informed decision as to which franchise system to become a part of. Surprisingly, however, few forward-looking metrics exist for franchisees. I seek to fill this gap through my proposed Mitacs Accelerate internship project. My proposed research addresses the critical question – what are the metrics that identify high potential franchise systems? Relying on franchise disclosure documents (FDDs) filed by more than 2,000 franchise systems across multiple industries over the past three years, I plan to compute franchise performance metrics that identify high potential franchise systems. My findings will provide guidance to franchisees on the investment potential of different franchise systems, and to franchisors on how to improve their performance.
