The Mystical Element of Continental Philosophy

My project explores the relationship between a type of philosophy called Continental philosophy and Christian mystical theology. This project develops upon a growing body of scholarship that seeks to understand how Christian theology in general has impacted the development of Continental philosophy. My project, building upon the work of Dr. Louise Nelstrop as well as Dr. Graham Ward, seeks to further this research by exploring the particular impact of mystical theology on Continental philosophy. My thesis is that some of the key theological premises that undergird mystical thought can be identified and isolated as major influences on the development of Continental philosophy. This thesis, if true, will yield greater insight into the ways in which Christian theology has impacted the development of modern systems of thought; of which Continental philosophy is one. The outcome of this research with have a positive impact on the learning objectives of my PhD by allowing me to work with internationally recognized scholars in this area of research.
