Treatment of mastitis infections in dairy cattle

Dairy industry is one of the largest industries in Canada with an annual turnover of $17 billion. Dairy producers in Saskatchewan sell over 273 million litres of milk a year, valued at 180 million dollars. Mastitis is a potentially fatal mammary gland infection in dairy herds that causes a significant reduction in milk production. The disease accounts a revenue loss of $400 million in Canada annually and the treatment of mastitis is a substantial economic burden to the dairy industry. This proposal aims at developing novel anti-bacterial drugs that can be safely administered to dairy cattle for treating mastitis. The project involves close collaboration with SaskMilk and dairy farms across Saskatchewan and will help support the production of safe and healthy milk for consumers. The newly designed drug will also lead to overcoming drug resistance that poses a threat for successful antimicrobial treatment for mastitis.
